Ty Kretz paced South Dakota State through the first day of the Iowa Fall Classic Monday, shooting a 71 (-1) in the morning round followed by a 77 (+5) in the afternoon. The sophomore is tied for fifth with 18 holes remaining.
The Jackrabbits carded a 611 (+35) as a team and is tied for fifth after two rounds. SDSU shares fifth place with DePaul and is three shots off fourth-place Southern Illinois.
Kretz collected one birdie through his first 13 holes of the day, then rolled in four birdies on his last five and finished the first round 1-under. He posted one birdie in the afternoon and carded a 77 (+5).
Jonah Dohrer opened with a 74 (+2) and then carded a 79 (+7) in the second round. He is tied for 19th place.
Matthew Schaefer tied for 21st at 10-over while
Luke Honner is in a four-way tie for 26th (+12).
Blake Schaper rounds out the lineup in a tie for 34th at 14-over.
The Jackrabbits tallied 23 birdies as a team Monday, the third most among the nine teams. Valparaiso leads the team standings at +19, one stroke over Iowa. The Hawkeyes' Mac McClear (-2) lead the individual leaderboard by two shots over Valpo's Yianni Kostouros.
The tournament will resume with a 9 a.m. shotgun start Tuesday.
