The South Dakota State soccer team hits the road for its two exhibition matches prior to the start of the regular season. The Jackrabbits are slated to face Nebraska at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in Lincoln followed by a contest versus Kansas in Lawrence at 1 p.m. on Friday.
Â
The trip will be SDSU's longest away from Brookings until the start of September as the Jacks host three of their first four regular season matches of the 2023 slate at Fishback Soccer Park. The matchups versus the Huskers and Jayhawks will provide challenges for the SDSU squad as it builds up during the fall.Â
Â
"Our focus is really going to be about what we're about which is growth," said South Dakota State head coach
Brock Thompson. "'Can we get better this week?' We have two extremely competitive opponents that will test us in different ways. The other thing is, 'can we deliver our best?' What better opportunity than in two games against two very good soccer teams and that's what preseason is all about. It's about growing and learning how to deliver our best in difficult moments. We need to do that well so it pays off at the end of the year."
Â
Nebraska is coming off an 8-7-5 season that ended in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals. Sarah Weber is the Huskers' returning leader offensively as she led the team with 10 goals and garnered United Soccer Coaches' All-Region Second Team accolades and first team All-Big Ten honors. The defense is led by senior Reagan Raabe who was a third team All-Big Ten recipient.
Â
Kansas went 9-9-2 overall in 2022 as its campaign ended in the opening round of the Big 12 Championship. The Jayhawks return Big 12 All-Freshman Team performer Lexi Watts along with 20-point scorer in Shira Elinav. Starting goalkeeper Melania Pasar also returns after starting 15 games for Kansas last fall.Â
Â
The match versus Nebraska will be streamed Big Ten Plus. Live stats for matches against both the Huskers and Jayhawks will provided on Statbroadcast and are available on the Jackrabbit soccer team's schedule page on GoJacks.com.
