MANKATO, Minn. ? The South Dakota State University men's track and field team recorded eight season-best marks during weekend competition at the MSU Open and Heptathlon.
The Jackrabbits were led by third-place finishes Rapid City natives Ben Jasinski in the heptathlon, Marshall Kambestad in the mile run and Corey Beffert in the long jump. Jasinski, a sophomore, placed third out of 13 competitors in the heptathlon Friday night with a score of 3,188 points. SDSU assistant coach Lyndon McDowell won the heptathlon with 4,069 points.
Kambestad improved on his season-best mark in the mile run, clocking a time of 4 minutes, 15.96 seconds to place third. Beffert turned in a season-best leap of 22 feet, 2 1/2 inches to take third in the long jump, and added a seventh-place time of 7.14 second sin the 60-meter dash.
Nick Schanaman also improved on his season-best time in the 60-meter hurdles, finishing fourth in 8.41 seconds.
Other season bests were recorded by D.J. Thompson in the 800-meter run, 1:59.26; Dan Winders in the 300-meter dash, 36.48 seconds; Sam McInerney with a sixth-place throw in the shot put, 46-3 1/4, and the Jackrabbit distance medley team with a time of 10:47.13.
Additional top performances were turned in by freshman Greg Vollmer, who placed fourth in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:07.20, and pole vaulter Tyler Schiferl, who cleared 14-7 1/2.
The Jackrabbits are slated to compete Feb. 8-9 at the Adidas Classic in Lincoln, Neb.
