With the start of the 2017 South Dakota State volleyball preseason just 12 days away, here are five things you need to know about the Jackrabbits.
Â
Lots of New Faces
With just five letterwinners returning from last year, there will be many new faces on the court in 2017. Third-year head coach
Nicole Cirillo welcomes nine newcomers to the roster, including eight freshmen. The Jackrabbits' lone senior,
Ellie Benson, along with juniors
Sierra Peterson and
Mattison Munger and sophomores
Makenzie Hennen and
Ashlynn Smith return for State.
Â
Finding a Starting Lineup
The Jackrabbits return five starters in the five returnees, but no one is guaranteed a starting spot. If all 15 on the roster stay healthy, Cirillo will have options when it comes to a lineup. When it comes to versatility, the Jackrabbits will have several players who can play multiple positions. SDSU now has the tools to counter opponents.
Â
Serve Receive Needs to Improve
Cirillo will be stressing serve receive for her team. Last season, the Jackrabbits finished with the most reception errors in Summit League play. To utilize the growth in offensive players, serve receive needs to be a focal point this fall.
Â
Climbing the Charts
Last year, setter
Mattison Munger collected 845 set assists and enters the season with 1,526 for her career. She needs 162 more set assists to move into 10th on the SDSU career list.
Â
900 Wins on the Horizon
SDSU volleyball has an all-time record of 894-683-8 after 51 years of play and is looking to record win No. 900 during the 2017 season. Only four other teams in The Summit League have reached the plateau.
South Dakota State opens the season at Milwaukee in the Panther Invitational in Milwaukee, Wis. Aug. 25-26. It marks the 12
th season SDSU has started the season on the road at a tournament. In addition to the Panthers, the Jackrabbits face Virginia Tech and Idaho State.
The home opener is Sept. 1 when State hosts the Hampton Inn Jackrabbits Invitational. It plays CSU-Bakersfield at 7 p.m. and then Valparaiso and Northern Arizona Sept. 2.
The Jacks play their annual Alumni scrimmage Aug. 19 at 6 p.m. in Frost Arena.
