ELMHURST, Ill.—After leading the South Dakota State volleyball team in hitting percentage last season and earning a spot on The Summit League All-Freshmen Team, sophomore
Ashlynn Smith was named to The Summit League Volleyball Watch List. It was released Thursday in conjunction with the 2017 preseason coaches poll.
The Laporte, Ind., native topped the team with a .224 hitting percentage and was second on the team in blocks (56) and blocks per set (0.55). Smith also averaged 1.45 kills per set.
After winning both the regular season and the league tournament the last three seasons, Denver was picked as the league's favorite in the poll, which was conducted by the league's coaches. The Pioneers earned 47 points and five first-place votes. South Dakota was picked second with 45 points and three first-place votes. Oral Roberts received 35 points for third.
Fort Wayne was selected fourth in the poll followed by Omaha, North Dakota State, the Jacks and Western Illinois.
The Jackrabbits will compete in an alumni match Saturday at 6 p.m. in the friendly confines of Frost Arena before opening their 52
st season in the Panther Invitational in Milwaukee, Wis., Aug. 25-26.
