Beran Scores 24 But Jacks Fall At Montana State

Montana State out-scored South Dakota State 10-2 in the closing minutes as the Bobcats rallied to defeat the Jackrabbits 78-73 in non-conference men’s basketball Monday night.

SDSU trailed 7-2 early in the game, went ahead 9-8 on a basket by Matt Cadwell, and led until MSU took a 66-65 lead on a free throw by Ted Morris. After SDSU hit a pair of free throws - one each by Mohamed Berte and Matt Cadwell - Ja’ron Jefferson scored a jumper in the lane to put MSU back on top 68-67. But Berte scored inside, and Ben Beran hit a layup after a steal giving SDSU a 71-68 lead.

A dunk by Al Beye and a layup by Derrick Edmonds put MSU ahead 72-71. After Edmonds’ basket, SDSU turned the ball over on the in-bounds pass, and Beye hit a jumper for a 74-71 MSU lead. SDSU closed within 74-73 on a tip-in by Berte, but MSU made four free throws in the closing seconds for the final margin.

SDSU had all three of its inside players in foul trouble in the first half, with Ben Beran, Mohamed Berte and Michael Loney with three fouls each at intermission.

After leading 32-29 at halftime, SDSU opened its biggest lead of the game at 45-35 on a tip in by Beran. And Beran scored 20 of his game high 24 points in the second half including one stretch when he had 11 straight SDSU points. Matt Cadwell added 16 and Andre Gilbert 11 for the Jacks, who had their best shooting night of the season, hitting 49.1 per cent from the field (27x55).

Jefferson led Montana State with 21 while Edmonds had 19and Beye 13. MSU shot 52.8 per cent (28x53) including 62 per cent (18x29) in the second half.

SDSU out-rebounded MSU 36-23 but had 24 turnovers.

The Jacks will have their only January home game Saturday when they host Utah Valley State
