Dusty Snyders scored on a 9-yard pass from Andy Kardoes with 1 minute, 8 seconds remaining as South Dakota State again rallied in the fourth quarter, defeating 16th-ranked UC Davis 22-21 in the 93rd Hobo Day game Saturday afternoon.
A crowd of 15,248, the third largest in Coughlin-Alumni Stadium history, cheered the Jackrabbits on to their fifth consecutive victory. SDSU improved to 5-3 overall and stayed undefeated in Great West Football Conference action at 2-0. UC Davis fell to 4-4 overall, 1-2 in the GWFC.
UC Davis took advantage of an SDSU penalty on fourth down in the opening drive of the game, putting together a methodical 19-play, 74-yard drive to take a 7-0 lead. Demario Warren capped the drive with a 2-yard touchdown pass from Jon Grant, followed by the extra point from Emmanuel Benjamin.
The Jackrabbits marched right back as Anthony Watson scored on a 3-yard run with 1:28 left in the quarter, finishing off a nine-play, 76-yard drive.
UC Davis took a 21-7 lead into halftime with a pair of second-quarter touchdowns. Tony Kays scored the first TD with a 3-yard reception from Grant, and Marcus Nolan followed with a 6-yard run three minutes later. The second Aggie touchdown came after Jonathan Barsi picked off a Kardoes pass and returned it 20 yards to the SDSU 17.
The second half belonged to the Jackrabbits. Parker Douglass, who missed his first two field goal attempts from 35 and 50 yards, connected on a 52-yarder with 2:58 left in the third quarter to pull SDSU to within 17-10.
The momentum appeared to shift back in the Aggies favor as on the first play from scrimmage after the field goal Nolan rumbled 79 yards on a screen pass to the Jackrabbit 1. Jeff Hegge's tackle not only saved a touchdown, it ended up saving the game for SDSU. The Aggies were flagged for a false start penalty on first down, and the Jackrabbit defense forced UCD into a field goal attempt.
Eric Schroeder then blocked the kick to keep the score 21-10.
Although the next Jackrabbit drive stalled, SDSU got the ball right back as Justin Kubesh forced and recovered a Nolan fumble at the SDSU 41. Eight plays later, Kardoes found Chris Wagner in the end zone for a 4-yard touchdown. The two-point conversion failed, but the Jacks were within five at 21-16.
UC Davis pushed the ball just across midfield on its next possession, but had to punt, giving SDSU the ball on its own 9-yard line with 6:52 remaining.
Kardoes then engineered the game-winning 12-play drive, keeping SDSU hopes alive with a 19-yard pass to Micah Johnson on third-and-three. He then found JaRon Harris on a 14-yard gain to put SDSU at midfield. After a personal foul penalty put the ball at the UC Davis 28, Kardoes ran for nine yards and threw for 10 more to Harris.
But a personal foul against the Jackrabbits pushed the ball back to the UCD 25. On third-and-21, Kardoes hit Snyders for 16 yards. With SDSU facing fourth-and-5 from the UCD 9, Kardoes again found Snyders, who broke free from an Aggie tackler to score the game-winner.
UCD's last drive was disrupted by a Jason Bonwell sack and came to an end as Grant's fourth-down pass fell incomplete.
Kardoes finished the game 23-of-36 passing for 278 yards with one interception. JaRon Harris recorded his second consecutive 100-yard receiving game with seven catches for 110 yards. Micah Johnson added seven catches for 73 yards, while Snyders finished with three catches for 63 yards.
Watson moved past Dan Sonnek for second place on the SDSU career rushing charts with his 18-carry, 104-yard performance.
The Jackrabbits held a 405-299 advantage in total offense.
Grant completed 23-of-29 passes for 210 yards, with Nolan catching 10 passes out of the backfield for 145 yards. Nolan also gained 57 yards on 20 carries.
Defensively,
Jimmy Rogers, starting in place of Andrew Hoogeveen at outside linebacker, made a game-high 15 tackles for SDSU. Kubesh added 11 stops.
Nevan Bergan and Barsi each tallied eight tackles for UC Davis.
SDSU closes out its home season Nov. 4, hosting William Penn (Iowa). The Jackrabbits return to Great West action Nov. 11 at Southern Utah.
