BROOKINGS, S.D. - Mackenzie Casey scored a career high 21 points in South Dakota State's home opener on Thursday night at Frost Arena, but the Jackrabbits came up short in a 74-66 loss to Idaho.
Trailing by four with 14:21 left in the first half, the Jacks went on an 11-0 run to take a 19-12 lead. During the run, the Vandals were held scoreless for almost seven minutes. Idaho battled back though, and took a 27-26 lead with 2:37 to go in the first half. SDSU regained the lead on a Casey layup and the Jacks went to the break up three, 32-29.
The first seven minutes of the second half saw four ties and four lead changes before Idaho took the lead for good at 51-48 with 13:24 left in the game on a Keoni Watson three-pointer.
Casey's career-high 21 points came off the bench on 7-of-12 shooting from the floor, including 3-for-5 from beyond the three-point arc. Casey also went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line and added four rebounds and a team high four assists.
Matt Cadwell scored a season-high 20 points on 7-of-16 shooting, 2-for-5 from beyond the arc and 4-for-7 from the line. He also added four rebounds and three assists.
Michael Loney rounded out the double-digit scoring for the Jacks. He came off the bench to go 5-for-7 from the floor for 10 points.
Watson led all scorers with 26 points on 8-of-16 shooting, including four three-pointers in seven tries, he also went 6-for-7 from the free-throw line.
Michael Crowell added 14 points for the Vandals, who finished the night shooting 44.8 percent from the floor (26-of-58). The Jacks shot 46.2 percent from the floor (24-of-52).
South Dakota State out-rebounded Idaho 34 to 32, but committed 18 turnovers compared to Idaho's 15.
Idaho improves to 1-1 with the win, while the Jacks fall to 0-4.
The Jacks return to the road next week to take on 2006 NCAA Tournament teams Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Wednesday in Milwaukee and Northern Iowa on Friday in Cedar Falls. Both games tip off at 7:05 p.m.
