INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Chris Holzwarth claimed two individual titles Friday night and added a pair of runner-up finishes Saturday to lead the South Dakota State University men's swimming and diving team during weekend competition at the IUPUI Quadrangular.
The Jackrabbits finished the two-day meet with a 2-4 record, recording a pair of vicotries over Butler (Ind.) -- 58-37 on Friday and 57-29 on Saturday. SDSU was defeated twice by Saint Louis University (Mo.), 83-25 on Friday and 77-19 on Saturday, and fell twice to host and Mid-Continent Conference opponent IUPUI by 69-44 and 68-36 counts. Competitors swam an event only once each day, with head-to-head times used to compute dual scores.
Holzwarth, a junior from Paradise, Calif., won the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 1 minute, 59.61 seconds, and later claimed the 500 freestyle in 4:52.58. He also swam the opening leg of the Jackrabbits' 200 medley relay on Friday, teaming with Chad Thomsen, Mark Garrigues and Hadleigh Tyler for a runner-up time of 1:39.52.
On Saturday, Garrigues won the 400 IM in 4:19.10, with Holzwarth second in 4:20.02. Holzwarth later placed second in the 500 freetyle in 4:54.65, with Garrigues adding a third-place time of 2:04.51 in the 200 backstroke.
Thomsen added an individual victory Friday in the 100 breaststroke, posting a time of 58.49 seconds. He also placed fourth in the 100 butterfly, 54.46 seconds.
Rounding out the top performances for the Jackrabbit men was sophomore Cade Roberts, who turned in a runner-up time of 2:10.87 in the 200 breaststroke on Saturday.
The Jackrabbits return to action Jan. 26-27 at the Minnesota Challenge in Minneapolis. SDSU returns to Indianapolis for the Mid-Continent Conference Championships Feb. 15-17.
