BROOKINGS, S.D. ? The South Dakota State men return home to Frost Arena after a short one-game road trip for a quick one-game home stand Friday against former North Central Conference opponent Northern Iowa.
Both teams played Wisconsin-Milwaukee in their last outing; the the Jacks fell 89-80 on Tuesday while UNI won 73-66 on Nov. 18.
Friday's game marks the 85th game in the series between the Jackrabbits and Panthers, who left the North Central Conference for Division I after the 1977-78 season.
South Dakota State, playing it its final year of transition from Division II to Division I and first in The Summit League, enters Friday's game with a 1-2 record, but continues to show signs of improvement each time they take the floor.
Northern Iowa enters the game with a perfect 4-0 record, including wins over Northern Illinois, Cal Poly, Massachusetts and UW-Milwaukee.
The Jacks head off to Moscow, Idaho, next week for the first of two meetings against the Vandals, a team that swept the series in 2006-07. SDSU then returns home for a game against Wisconsin-Green-Bay on Dec. 1, and then opens conference play on Dec. 6 at Centenary and on Dec. 8, at defending conference champion Oral Roberts.

THE SUMMIT LEAGUE
? South Dakota State begins play in The Summit League in 2007-08. The
Jackrabbits played their first three years in Division I as
Independents.
IN TRANSITION ? The 2007-08 season marks the final year of transition for South Dakota State into the NCAA Division I level in all sports ? Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) for football.
SDSU previously competed at the Division II level as a charter member of the North Central Conference.
Beran Closing in on 1,000-Point Club ? Senior Ben Beran entered the 2007-08 season with 928 career points, just 72 points shy of becoming the 38th member of the SDSU 1,000 Point Club.
He scored 14 points in the Jacks season-opening win, and 16 against Montana and 21 at UW-Milwaukee, which gives him 979 for his career. Beran needs 21 more points this season to join the club.
Series Notes vs. Northern Iowa ? The Jackrabbits lead the series, which started during the 1935-36 season 51-33. Known as the Iowa Teachers College until 1952, Northern Iowa won the first ever meeting in the 1935 season opener 32-30. The Jacks won the second meeting 39-37 in the second game of the season.
The last game in the series went to the Panthers last season on Nov. 24, in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Current UNI senior Eric Coleman led four teammates in double figures with 16 points in the win. The Panthers jumped out to a five-point lead at the half, and then outscored the Jacks 41-33 in the second half to secure the 69-56 win.
On Feb. 16, 1968, the Jackrabbits scored an SDSU conference game record 121 points in a 121-78 win over the Panthers, a record that still stands today.
NORTHERN IOWA NOTES ? The Panthers' first three wins of the season came at the BTI Tip-Off Tournament, hosted by UNI at the new McLeod Center in Cedar Falls. Senior Eric Coleman took home MVP honors, while senior Jared Josten and sophomore Adam Koch earned all-tournament team honors.
UNI head coach Ben Jacobson has used the same starting five in all four games this season, but nine of his 12 players on the roster have seen time in all four games.
Despite not starting a game, Coleman leads the team in scoring with 14.8 points per game, and in rebounding with ten per game.
Josten is close behind with 14 points per game, followed by the Panthers seven foot sophomore center Jordan Eglseder with 12.3 points per game.
SDSU 80, UW-MILWAUKEE 89: 11/20/07 ? South Dakota State went into the locker room at halftime with a ten-point lead over Wisconsin-Milwaukee, but the Jackrabbits could not hold on to it, as the Panthers outscored the Jacks 55-36 in the second half to secure the 89-80 on Tuesday night in Milwaukee.
UW-Milwaukee jumped out to an early 9-5, but the Jackrabbits responded with an 11-0 run to take a 16-9 lead with 14:16 left in the first half.
The Panthers countered with an 8-0 run to tie things up at 17 all. The Jacks would take the lead back and keep it until UWM tied it up at 32, only to see SDSU end the first half on a 12-2 run and a 44-34 lead at the break, despite 13 first-half turnovers.
It took less than three minutes in the second half for the Panthers rattle off ten unanswered points and tie the game at 44 with 17:10 left in the game.
An Anthony Cordova lay-up would end the run, but a Torre Johnson jumper with 15:10 to go broke a 48 all tie, and the Panthers never trailed again.
UWM would see a 12 point lead get cut to four on a dunk by Kai Williams with 2:11 to play, but he got a technical foul hanging on a rim and the Panthers quickly built their lead back to the eventual nine-point final margin.
Ben Beran led the Jacks with 21 points, Garrett Callahan added 19, while Williams finished with 16.
The Jacks shot 59.3 percent (16-of-27) in the first half, but shot 41.7 percent in the second half to finish with a 49.2 shooting percentage in the game.
UWM bounced back from a 38.7 percent (12-of-31) effort in the first half to shoot 54.3 percent (19-of-35), including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc, in the second half and 47 percent for the game.
Custer, S.D., native Paige Paulson led all scorers with 27 points, Johnson scored 22 and Tim Flowers ten to round out the Panthers' double-digit scorers.
SDSU finished the game with 22 turnovers, while UWM committed 12.
SDSU 61, MONTANA 70: 11/17/07 ? Jordan Hasquet scored Montana's first 13 points of the second half en route to a game-high 29 points, leading the Grizzlies to a 70-61 victory over South Dakota State in men's basketball action Saturday night before a crowd of 2,397 at Frost Arena.
Montana improved to 3-1, while the Jackrabbits dropped to 1-1.
The first half was closely contested with Montana holding the largest lead at six points on three occasions, the last 26-20 after a pair of Kyle Sharp free throws. SDSU closed the half with a 10-4 run to pull even going into halftime at 30.
After the Jackrabbits took their first lead of the night at 33-32 early in the second half on a free throw by Clint Sargent. SDSU led 37-36 before Hasquet, who sat out the last 10 minutes of the first half with foul trouble, outscored the Jackrabbits 7-0 over a one-minute, 13-second stretch to give the Grizzlies the lead for good.
Spearfish native Matt Martin, who scored 11 points, added back-to-back three-pointers to give Montana a double-digit lead, 49-39, at the 12:09 mark, and the lead grew to 16 three minutes later as SDSU went scoreless for nearly five minutes.
The Jackrabbits whittled away at the lead, but could not get any closer than the final margin of nine the rest of the way.
Ben Beran led the Jackrabbits with 16 points, while Garrett Callahan and Clint Sargent added 11 and 10, respectively. SDSU shot 21-of-49 from the floor, 43 percent, but was just 3-of-15 on three-point tries. The Jackrabbits converted 16-of-23 attempts at the free throw line, 69.6 percent.
The Grizzlies shot an even 50 percent from the field, 26-of-52, and were 6-of-17 on three-pointers. At the line, Montana made 12-of-18 attempts, 67 percent.
SDSU controlled the boards, out-rebounding the Grizzlies, 36-27. Kai Williams led the Jackrabbits with nine rebounds, with redshirt freshman Anthony Cordova coming off the bench to grab eight boards.
