SAN JOSE, Calif. ? South Dakota State led by 17-points with just over nine minutes to go on Sunday against San Jose State, but a Tim Pierce three-pointer beat the second half buzzer to send the game to overtime, where the Spartans outscored the Jackrabbits 12-6, sending the Jacks to their second straight overtime loss, this time by the score of 77-71.
The loss sends the Jacks to 5-8 on the season, while the Spartans improve to 6-5.
SDSU scored the first basket of the game, never trailed throughout regulation and went into the locker room at halftime with a 39-25 lead on 64 percent (16-of-25) shooting and despite 11 turnovers. SJSU shot 30.6 percent (11-of-36) in the first half and only turned the ball over four times.
The Jacks built that lead to 17 points with 9:03 left to play, but saw it get cut to five with a 12-0 Spartan run over the next four minutes.
Garrett Callahan broke the run with a free throw, but San Jose State continued to chip away at the lead until Pierce hit the three to send the game to overtime.
Kai Williams, who led all scorers with 18-points, opened the extra period with a three-pointer, but the Spartans countered with a 10-0 run to secure the win.
Callahan and Clint Sargent joined Williams in double digits, Callahan finished with 15 and Sargent added ten points.
DaShawn Wright led five Spartans, all starters, in double figures with 17-points.
Turnovers and free throws made the difference down the stretch, the Jackrabbits committed 22 turnovers and shot 57.1 percent (12-for-21) from the free throw line, including a 6-for-13 effort over the last eight minutes.
The Spartans committed 12 turnovers and shot 74.1 percent (20-for-27) from the line.
SJSU also won the rebounding battle down the stretch. The Jacks held a 21-14 lead on the boards at halftime, but got out rebounded 25-15 in the second half and overtime.
The Jackrabbits return home to Frost Arena on Thursday to resume Summit League against Oakland, and on Saturday in the Lamb Bonanza against IPFW.
