BROOKINGS, S.D. ? South Dakota State returned home Tuesday for the first time since February 3, to take on Cal State Northridge. The two teams exchanged the lead seven times and played to seven ties, but in the end, the team that scored last won. Despite a valiant Jackrabbit effort, the Matadors scored last, and won the game 64-63.
Cal State Northridge opened the scoring with a Jason Hill layup on its first possession, but Kai Williams answered with a three pointer on the Jacks first trip down the floor to put SDSU on top 3-2.
The Matadors took the lead right back on a Jonathan Heard layup and even though they did not trail the rest of the half, they did not get up by more than six points before taking a 32-28 lead into the locker room.
SDSU shot just 33.3 percent (8-of-24) in the first half, but stayed in the game by going 10-for-13 from the free throw line. Cal State Northridge shot 50 percent (12-of-24) from the field in the first half and made all six of its free throws.
Both teams committed 15 first-half turnovers, but that sloppy play disappeared at the halftime, setting up a back and forth battle in the second half.
Cal State Northridge pushed its lead back up to six points to start the second half, before the Jacks started chipping away.
The much-needed Jackrabbit spark came 3 minutes, 49 seconds into the half, when Matt Cadwell launched the ball, nearly from half court, to Williams who completed the alley-oop dunk with authority, getting the crowd of 1,528 into the game.
With the crowd now behind them, the Jacks took the lead with 13 minutes, 21 seconds remaining on a Jose Frias three pointer, officially starting the back and forth battle for the lead.
Over the next six minutes, the lead changed hands twice and was tied three times before the Matadors got a grasp on it with 5 minutes, 43 seconds left.
Two ties and just over five minutes later, the Jacks got the lead back one more time at 63-62 on a Frias free throw with 39 seconds remaining.
But Thomas Shewmake hit two clutch free throws with 21 seconds left to put the Matadors back on top for good.
The Jacks got one last chance after the Shewmake free throws, but could not get the home roll.
Frias and Williams led all scorers with 19 points apiece. Frias also grabbed five rebounds, a pair of assists and four steals.
Williams shot, and made, a career high five three pointers and also chipped in four rebounds and an assist.
Calvin Chitwood led the Matadors with 18 points off the bench, while Shewmake finished with a double-double, 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Cal State Northridge improves to 13-14 on the season, while the Jacks, now 5-22 and riding a season long seven game losing steak, return to action on Saturday against North Dakota State in Fargo, for their final road game of the season.
