KENNESAW, Ga. ? South Dakota State opened play at the Independent/Kennesaw State Tournament Friday in Kennesaw Ga., but failed to come away with a win, falling to the host Owls 9-1 in the opener and 4-1 to North Dakota State in the night cap.
KSU pounded out four hits off Jackrabbit starter Jenna Marston in the first inning, scoring one run in the process.
SDSU got a rally started in the bottom of the first, when Brooke Postma hit a two-out single. Postma then stole her SDSU single-season record tying 25th base of the year to get into scoring position.
Brittany Postma followed that with a single, but was unable to advance her sister Brooke past third base and the rally ended in the next at bat without a run.
After Marston sat down the Owls in order in the second, the Jacks started another rally, but this time got a run across to tie the game at one.
Dani Broshar opened the Jackrabbit second with a single to left field, and then advanced to second on a throwing error. Three batters later, Jessica Vineyard capitalized on the Owl miscue, belting a run scoring single to tie the game.
Kennesaw state came firing back though, scoring two runs in the third, one in the fourth and five in the sixth to secure the 9-1 win.
Marston gave up ten hits through five innings, striking out three and walking none, but gave up the first four runs en route to the loss.

The Bison beat the Jacks in four previous meetings this season, and made it five straight with the win on Friday.
NDSU wasted no time in taking the lead. Melissa Chmielewski hit a two-RBI double to the gap in left center field in the first to give the Bison an early 2-0 lead.
They increased that lead to 3-0 in the second, capitalizing on a Jackrabbit error.
Chmielewski then put the game on ice in the third, when she led off the inning with her fifth home run of the season over the left field fence.
The Jacks avoided the shutout in the seventh, when Steph Kuhl hit an RBI single to center field to score Samantha Heinzman from second, but the rally fell short.
Marston pitched all six innings, giving up eight hits and four earned runs, walking just one and striking out none.
The loss drops the Jacks to 13-30 on the season and 0-2 in pool play heading into Saturday's action.
