The fifth inductee into the SDSU Hall of Fame, Clarence Schutte was nicknamed “the man who stopped Red Grange” for his football exploits with Minnesota. But before enrolling at Minnesota, he also starred at Northern State and South Dakota State.
The Hecla native scored all three Minnesota touchdowns when the Gophers defeated Illinois and Grange, 20-7. Schutte rushed for 282 yards in that game, and was a major factor on a defense that stopped Grange. After college, he coached football for 23 seasons at Santa Barbara High School in California and posted a 173-45-12 record. From 1951 to 1961, he was head golf coach and athletic director at Santa Barbara.
He was the 11th inductee into the Howard Wood Relays Hall of Fame (1969) and was also inducted into the California Coaches Hall of Fame. He died Nov. 5, 1969, at the age of 69.
