Herb Bartling, an All-America quarterback on South Dakota State's last unbeaten football team, became the 15th member of the Jackrabbit Sports Hall of Fame in 1979. Bartling lettered four times in both football and basketball and was named Most Valuable Player in the NCC after guiding the Jacks to a 9-0-1 season in 1950 and a league championship. He also quarterbacked the 1949 team to a share of the title.
Bartling was SDSU's best passing quarterback to that date, and quarterbacked the team which also had SDSU's first 1,000 yard rusher, Warren Williamson. He was all-NCC in football in 1949 and 1950, and was all-NCC in basketball in 1950 and 1951. He was listed in Who's Who in American College and Universities in 1951, was selected to Blue Key, and was a distinguished military graduate in ROTC.
After serving in the military during the Korean Conflict, he spent one year in Texas, then returned to SDSU as placement counselor. He remained on the SDSU staff in various capacities from 1956 through August, 1969, when he accepted a position at Eastern Illinois University. He later moved to Houghton-Mifflin publishing company in Charleston,Ill., where he was a reading test editor. Bartling earned his bachelor's degree at SDSU, added a master's degree at Texas in 1956, and doctorate at University of Iowa in 1979.
