BROOKINGS, S.D. ? South Dakota State wrapped up the 2007 season on Thursday with a 6-3 win over former North Central Conference opponent St. Cloud State, thanks in large part to sophomore Samantha Heinzman who went 3-for-3 at the plate with two triples, a double, two RBI and two runs scored.
The Jackrabbits jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, and never looked back.
Amanda Fedson got things going for the Jacks in the first inning with a one-out single, advancing to second base on a SCSU error.
Heinzman followed that up with her first triple of the game, a hard shot to left center field that easily scored Fedson from second.
The second run of the inning came via the squeeze play. Dani Broshar laid down a perfect bunt down the third base line allowing Heinzman to score.
Heinzman opened the Jackrabbit third with a double to center, advanced to third on a Broshar ground out and scored on a Steph Kuhl sacrifice fly to put the Jacks up 3-0.
That sacrifice fly represented Kuhl's final RBI as a Jackrabbit, giving her a record 131 for her career. Kuhl also finishes her career as the Jackrabbits' all-time leader in home runs with 25.
The Huskies got on the board in the top of the fourth, but the Jacks got that run back in the bottom of the fifth, when Brittany Postma hit a lead-off walk stole second, and then scored on Heinzman's second triple of the game to give SDSU a 4-1 lead.
SCSU scored again in the sixth, but Kiley Schwedhelm got that one back with one swing of the bat, when she opened the Jacks half of the sixth with her second home run of the season, a solo blast over the fence in left center field.
Howell drew a walk in the next at-bat, stole second and advanced to third on a Denise Leon pinch-hit single.
Leon got thrown out trying to steal second, but that allowed Howell to steal home for the Jackrabbits sixth and final run.
St. Cloud State scored one in the top of the seventh, but the rally fell short when a Jessica Vineyard unassisted double play ended the game and the season.
Jenna Marston pitched her 21st complete game of the season and earned the win to finish her season with a 13-17 record. Marston scattered eight hits, allowing three runs, two earned, while striking out four and walking three.
The aptly named Jackrabbits shattered the school record in 2007 with 99 stolen bases, 17 better than the record breaking total of 82 set in 2006, and they did it in 11 fewer games.
Brooke Postma set the SDSU single-season record for stolen bases with 27, getting caught stealing just once.
The Jackrabbits, who begin play in the Mid-Continent Conference in 2008, finish the 2007 campaign with a 17-32 record.
