South Dakota State University has filled a vacancy in its football coaching staff with the hiring of Clark Lea as linebackers coach, head coach John Stiegelmeier announced Monday.
Lea (pronounced lee) joins the Jackrabbits after serving as a defensive graduate assistant at UCLA, working on a Bruin staff that posted a 7-6 overall record and fourth-place finish in the Pac-10 Conference. He also previously served as an offensive graduate assistant at his alma mater, Vanderbilt (Tenn.), and an assistant high school coach.
As a student-athlete, Lea began his collegiate career as a baseball player -- first at Birmingham Southern, and then at Belmont (Tenn.). He later transferred to Vanderbilt, where he lettered in football three times (2002-04) and earned All-Academic SEC honors while majoring in political science.
Lea replaces Josh Conklin, who resigned earlier this month to accept a similar position at Wofford College (S.C.).
With Lea's hiring as linebackers coach, two other assistants will see a shift in their coaching responsibilities. Jay Bubak will coach the secondary in addition to his duties as defensive coordinator, and Rob Sarvis will coordinate the special teams while also coaching the defensive line.
South Dakota State, a member of the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision's Great West Football Conference, finished the 2006 season with a 7-4 overall record. The Jackrabbits, who are ranked in the top 25 of several preseason polls, open the 2007 campaign Aug. 30 at Western Illinois.
