South Dakota State opened the 2008-09 season at home last week with a 70-62 loss to San Jose State on Friday and a 92-61 win over Mayville State (N.D.) on Sunday. The Jackrabbits first road game of the season came in a 72-56 loss at Virginia Commonwealth in the first of their two games of the Cancun Challenge played in the United States. VCU entered the week with a No. 6 rating in the collegeinsider.com mid-major Top-25 poll and received votes in the latest Associated Press Top-25 poll.
The second game of the Cancun Challenge played in the U.S. comes on Sunday, when the Jacks and Drake Bulldogs square off in the Knapp Center at 2 p.m.
Drake not only made the NCAA Tournament in 2008 out of the Missouri Valley Conference, but they garnered a No. 5 seed, only to fall in a 101-99 heartbreaker on a buzzer-beater by No. 12 seed Western Kentucky.
SDSU NOTES ? Sophomore Clint Sargent leads the Jacks through the first three games of the season with 17.3 points per game, thanks in large part to his career-high 20 point game at VCU. He also ranks second on the team with 8.3 rebounds per game. Junior Garrett Callahan ranks second on the team with 16.3 points per game.
Sophomore Anthony Cordova leads the Jacks with 11.7 rebounds per game and adds 8.3 points per game.
As a team, the Jacks shoot just .398 from the field, but outscore their opponents through three games 70-67.7, they also out rebound their opponents 43.3-35.3.

RABBITS ON TELEVISION ? Sunday's game between South Dakota State and Drake (Iowa) scheduled will be televised live on the Mediacom Connections Channel (Channel 10 in the Brookings area).
Coverage from the Knapp Center in Des Moines, Iowa, is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
SDSU basketball will have an increased presence on Mediacom throughout the 2008 season. Replays of Jackrabbit men's and women's home games will air several times a week on the Mediacom Connections Channel in South Dakota and Minnesota, as will coaches' shows, starting when conference play begins in December.
THE LAST TIME OUT ? Sophomore Clint Sargent scored a career-high 20 points and pulled down a career-high ten rebounds for his first-career double-double, but it came in a loss, as Virginia Commonwealth downed the Jackrabbits 72-56 on Wednesday night in Richmond, Va.
The Rams, who entered the week ranked No. 6 in the collegeinsider.com mid-major poll and received votes in the Associated Press Top-25, improve to 2-0 on the season, while the Jacks fall to 1-2.
Junior Garrett Callahan led the Jacks with 21 points, 13 of which came in the second half, the last eight of them from the free-throw line.
Sargent reached his career-mark going 6-of-13 from the floor, 5-of-9 from three-point range and a perfect 3-for-3 from the charity stripe.
No other Jackrabbit scored more than four points in the loss, as the rest of the team combined to score 15-points.
Sophomore Anthony Cordova led all players with 11 rebounds to go with his four points.
VCU all-American and NBA prospect Eric Maynor led all players with 29 points on 11-of-19 shooting.
Wednesday's game marked the first of two games in the Cancun Challenge played on U.S. soil, the second comes on Sunday, when the Jacks square off against Drake in Des Moines. That game can be seen live on Mediacom cable channel 10 in Brookings.
WILLIAMS CLOSES IN ON 1,000 POINTS ? Junior Kai Williams entered the 2008-09 season with 769 career points, just 231 shy of becoming the 39th member of the SDSU 1,000-Point Club and the first to score all of them at the Division I level. Williams scored a total of 28-points in the Jackrabbits first two games, leaving him 209-points short of the milestone. The Regina, Saskatchewan native led the team in scoring and rebounding in each of his first two years on the team.
TRANSITION OVER ? The NCAA Division I Management Council Administrative Committee, acting on behalf of the DI Management Council, announced in late June that South Dakota State University met the requirements to become an active member of NCAA Division I, starting at the beginning of the 2008-09 academic year.
Previously a member of Division II, SDSU Successfully completed the five-year process of moving its athletic programs to comply with Division I membership requirements. Those requirements include compliance with Division I rules for the final four years, meeting minimum financial aid and contest scheduling limits, engaging in a rules compliance review and successfully complete the athletics certification process.
SDSU officials submitted an extensive self-study to the NCAA in the spring of 2007 and a peer-review team completed the study during a campus visit in October 2007.
THIS WEEK'S COMPETITION
Drake Bulldogs (1-1, 0-0 Missouri Valley) ? Drake opened the season at home on Nov. 15, with a 58-48 loss to Butler (Ind.), but rebounded to beat Morehead State (Ky.) on Wednesday to improve to 1-1 on the season.
Josh Young far-and-away leads the Bulldog offense through two games with 26.5 points per game, which includes a 9-for-18 effort from three-point range. Bill Eaddy ranks second on the team with 10 points per game.
As a team through two games, Drake actually shoots better from beyond the arc ? 21-for-48 (.438 percent) ? than they do overall from the floor ? 40-for-96 (.147 percent). Drake shoots well from the line as well, not only do they own a 38-16 edge in attempts, the made 33 of those attempts for a .868 free-throw percentage.
Brent Heemskerk leads the Drake defense with 7.5 rebounds per game, tied for second with three steals and ranks second on the team with four blocks. He also adds a pair of assists and no turnovers.
The Series vs. Drake ? Sunday's game marks the sixth meeting between Drake and SDSU, but the first in 43 years.
The Bulldogs hold a 4-1 series edge, including a 90-65 Drake win in the last meeting on Dec. 4, 1965.
The lone Jackrabbit win in the series came in the only game in Brookings, an 83-73 win on Dec. 8, 1958.
Upper Iowa Peacocks (0-2, 0-0 NSIC) ? The Peacocks opened the season last week with an 81-67 loss at Drury (Mo.) and then fell at Wis.-Milwaukee 87-59 on Wednesday in Milwaukee.
Matt Lesan leads the Peacocks with 11 points per game, and is the only player on the team to average in double-digits. UIU shot .431 in its first two games, turned the ball over 12 more times that its opponents (39-27).
Defensively over the first two games, the Peacocks allow their opponents to shoot .566 from the floor, but just .174 from three-point range. Their opponents out rebound them 45-40, including a 46-39 edge on the defensive glass.
Individually, Nick Kramer leads the team with a total of eight rebounds for a 4.0 per game average.
The Series vs. Upper Iowa ? The Jacks won the first and only meeting with the Peacocks 70-59 on Feb. 5, 2005 at Frost Arena.
NEXT UP FOR THE JACKRABBITS ? The Jackrabbits return to action this weekend, when they resume play in the Cancun Challenge with a pair of games in Cancun, Mexico.
