South Dakota State held off a late charge by Upper Iowa on Tuesday night to hang on for a 69-65 win in front of 1,348 fans in Frost Arena. The Jackrabbits led by 16 points with under seven minutes to play, but the Peacocks went on a 12-1 run to cut lead to five at 62-57 and even though they got as close as two-points they could never close the gap.
The Jackrabbits improve to 2-3 with the win, while Upper Iowa falls to 0-3.
Garrett Callahan continued his offensive prowess in leading all scorers and three Jackrabbits in double figures with 23 points, his highest output of the season.
Clint Sargent added 15 points while Kai Williams pitched in with ten points and a game-high nine rebounds.
Dylan Diedrich led the Peacocks with 18 points.
Upper Iowa came out hot, and opened the game on a 7-0 run. Williams ended the run with a pair of free throws and Callahan cut the deficit to two at 7-5 on the Jacks first field goal at the 14:58 mark of the first half.
The Peacocks held on to the lead though, and did not relinquish it until another Callahan three put SDSU on top 27-25 with 2:33 left in the first half.
The Jacks stretched the lead to seven at 34-27 at the half on a Williams tip-in at the buzzer.
The game stayed close for the first few minutes of the second half before the Jacks opened up their 16-point lead, only to see the Peacocks almost erase it.
Callahan made another three late and Sargent made some clutch free throws to secure the Jackrabbit win.
The Jacks struggled to shoot 33 percent (11-of-33) in the first half, but bounced back in the second half to shoot an even 45 percent (9-of-20). Upper Iowa went 9-of-18 in the first half and 13-of-26 in the second half for a game total of 50 percent.
Led by Callahan and his 7-for-11 night from long distance, SDSU shot 46 percent (11-of-24) from three-point range. IUI also made 11 three-pointers, but did it in three less attempts for a 52.4 percent average.
The Jacks turned the ball over 10 times and dished out 15 assists while the Peacocks turned the ball over 15 times with 14 helpers.
The Jackrabbits now leave the South Dakota cold for the Cancun, Mexico sun with a pair of games at the Cancun Challenge.
SDSU squares off against Central Florida on Saturday at 5 p.m and then play Central Arkansas on Sunday at 2 p.m.
