CEDAR FALLS, Iowa ? After sitting out a year due to transfer rules, redshirt freshmen Griffan Callahan led the Jackrabbits with 14 points and six rebounds in his collegiate debut on Sunday at Northern Iowa. Unfortunately for him and his team though, it came in a 72-55 loss against the Panthers at the McLeod Center in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
The loss drops the Jacks to 5-8 overall, while Northern Iowa improves to 6-5.
A transfer from North Dakota, and younger brother of junior Garrett Callahan, Griffan made five of his eight shots from the floor, including a 3-of-5 effort from three-point range, which accounted for half of the Jacks three-pointers.
Clint Sargent finished with 11 points and made the other SDSU three-pointers, as the Jacks struggled to shoot just 26 percent, 6-of-23, from beyond the arc. UNI also made six three-pointers, but did so in just 11 attempts (54.5 percent).
Garrett Callahan also scored 11 points on 4-of-10 shooting and added five rebounds and four assists.
Kwadzo Ahelegbe led three Panthers in double figures with 16 points.
Northern Iowa took an early 6-4 lead, and then erupted for a 17-1 run to take a 23-5 lead with 6:03 remaining in the first half.
The Panthers then closed the half on a 6-0 run to take a 40-19 lead into the lockerroom at halftime.
The lead reached 24-points in the second half, before the Jacks eventually worked their way back to the final 17-point final deficit of 72-55.
SDSU came out cold, shooting 28 percent in the first half on 7-of-25 shooting. UNI came out firing on all cylinders, going 15-of-24 in the first half for a 62.5 shooting percentage.
The Jackrabbits return to action on Tuesday, when they travel to Ames, Iowa to take on Iowa State at Hilton Coliseum. Tipoff is slated for 7:07 p.m. in a game that can be seen live on Mediacom Cable, Mediacom Connections Channel 10 in Brookings.
