South Dakota State got a balanced offensive attack and dominated the boards in defeating Centenary 71-58 on Thursday night in front of 1,978 fans at Frost Arena for its first Summit League win of the season.
The Jackrabbits improve to an even 4-4 overall with the win, 1-0 in The Summit League, while the Gents fall to 2-7 overall and 0-1 in league play.
Garrett Callahan led the Jacks with 20 points in the win, the last nine of them coming from the free throw line. Anthony Cordova scored a career-high 15 points and added ten rebounds for his second career double-double. Dale Moss also recorded a double-double, the first of his career, with 12 points to go along with his game and career-high 12 rebounds.
Centenary's Chase Adams led all scorers with 21 points. Both Nick Stallings and Roman Tubner added ten points in the loss.
SDSU struggled from the three-point line, going just 1-of-8 (12.5 percent), but shot 41.7 percent overall from the floor on 20-of-48 shooting. The Gents did not fair much better, going 5-of-20 from long range (25 percent) and 38.2 percent overall from the floor on 21-of-55 shooting.
Centenary scored first, but the Jacks took the lead on a trio of Mackenzie Casey free throws and even though they never trailed again, they did not put the game away until late in the second half.
The Gents came back to tie game at 11-all with 12:10 to go in the first half, but the Jacks countered with an 8-0 run to go up 19-11 with 8:37 left in the half.
The lead would reach as many as ten points in the first half, but the Gents closed the half strong, and the Jacks went to the lockerroom up four at 31-27.
Centenary came out strong in the second half and tied the game at 37-all with 15:24 left in the game, but the Jacks stayed the course, eventually building their lead back up to nine points at 52-43 with 6:27 on the clock.
The Gents made one more rally to get back within two points at 52-50 on an Adams three-pointer with 3:58 left, but the Jacks came back with a 9-1 run, highlighted by a Moss put-back dunk, to get the lead back to ten points and Callahan secured the win from the free throw line.
The Jackrabbits return to action with a Summit League game against Oral Roberts on Saturday. Tip-off from Frost Arena is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., following the women's game against ORU at 5 p.m.
Oral Roberts comes into the game with a 1-5 overall record, 0-1 in The Summit League after dropping an 83-75 game on Thursday at North Dakota State.
