WICHITA, Kan. ? South Dakota State came up short in its only game on a cold first day of the Shocker Invitational, falling to the host Wichita State 5-3.
The Jackrabbits sixth straight loss drops them to 4-10 on the season, while the Shockers, who received votes in this week's ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 poll, improve to 13-7.
SDSU opened the scoring in the top of the first, when Stacey Evans smacked a two-out double that scored Jessica Vineyard for a 1-0 Jacks lead.
The lead did not last, as Wichita State capitalized on a trio of Jackrabbit miscues in the bottom half of the inning to score four runs on two hits, two errors and an illegal pitch to take a 4-1 lead.
The Shockers tacked on another unearned run in the second for a 5-1 lead.
The Jacks got one back in the top of the third when Ashley Durazo singled home Greta Stroh from third to make the score 5-2.
Brittany Postma hit a one-out single in the top of the sixth inning, stole second and then scored on a Kiley Schwedhelm single to get the Jacks within two runs at 5-3, but comeback came up short.
The Jackrabbits return to action on Saturday against Iowa State at 9 a.m. and against Summit League foe UMKC in a non-conference game at 3 p.m.
