Jacks host IPFW and Oakland on Pork Classic weekend

South Dakota State concludes its season-long three game homestand this week as Jackrabbits start the second half of The Summit League schedule looking to avenge first half losses against IPFW on Thursday and against Oakland on Saturday in 37th Annual Pork Classic.
The Mastodons trampled the Jacks in the first meeting with a 100-66 win on Jan. 2, while the Golden Grizzlies held off the Jackrabbits in an 86-81 win on Dec. 31.
Taking a lead into the lockerroom could go a long way towards earning a victory over IPFW this week, as the ?Dons come in with an 0-10 record this season when they trail at the half. The same goes for Oakland, as the Grizzlies won each of its last ten games when they led at the half. OU also enters the game with a 10-0 record when it shoots 40 percent or better from behind the three-point arc.
The Jacks enter the week with an 8-13 overall record, 3-6 in league play, thanks to a trio of tough losses in their last three games, which includes a two-point loss at UMKC followed by back-to-back overtime losses at Southern Utah and at home against North Dakota State last Friday.
SDSU NOTES ? Garrett Callahan leads the Jackrabbit offense with 16.8 points per game, with 52 assists and with 21 steals. Clint Sargent enters the week averaging 14.8 points, while Anthony Cordova, fresh off an career-high 21 points against North Dakota State, averages 10.7 points and 6.7 rebounds per game.
Kai Williams, who led the Jacks in scoring in each of his first two years on the team, averages 9.8 points, a team-high 6.9 rebounds to go along with his six blocks. Dale Moss also enters the week with a team-high six blocks.
As a team, the Jacks shoot .440 from the floor overall and .354 from three-point range for an average of an even 70 points per game. Jackrabbit opponents shoot .476 from the field, .339 from long distance in scoring 71.2 points per game.
The Jacks hold a 0.9 rebounding edge over their opponents, but enter the game with 34 fewer blocks, 31 fewer steals and with 23 more turnovers.
RABBITS ON THE RADIO ? All Jackrabbit men's basketball games, home and on the road, can be heard live on AM 570 WNAX, with Steve Imming doing the play-by-play. The pre-game show begins 15 minutes before tipoff.

RABBITS ON TELEVISION ? South Dakota State and KSFY Television reached an agreement to broadcast both of the Jackrabbit men's basketball games against North Dakota State this season.
With the first game in the books, the next meeting between the Jackrabbits and Bison on Tuesday, Feb. 17, can be seen live on KSFY-TV in South Dakota and on KXJB-TV in Fargo, N.D.
Replays of Jackrabbit men's and women's home games, along with coaches' shows can be seen several times a week on the Mediacom Connections Channel in South Dakota and Minnesota. Check your local listings for show times.
COUNTDOWN TO 1,000 POINTS ? Junior Kai Williams enters the week with 974 career points, 26 shy of becoming the 39th member of the SDSU 1,000-Point Club and the first to score all of them at the Division I level.
Fellow junior Garrett Callahan, who leads the Jacks with 16.8 points per game, enters the week with 925 points, 75 shy of joining the club.
TRANSITION OVER ? The NCAA Division I Management Council Administrative Committee, acting on behalf of the DI Management Council, announced in late June that South Dakota State University met the requirements to become an active member of NCAA Division I, starting at the beginning of the 2008-09 academic year.
THE 37th ANNUAL PORK CLASSIC ? The pork barbecue begins at runs from 4-6 p.m. on the track in Frost Arena, tickets can be purchased at the door for $7.
Fans can bid on 15 pork bundles in a live auction at halftime of the women's game and can also bid on five pork bundles and on a live hog at halftime of the men's game.
Proceeds from the pork bundles go to support undergraduate scholarships in the SDSU Department of Animal and Range Sciences.
MEN'S BASKETBALL ALUMNI GATHERING ? The second annual South Dakota State men's basketball alumni gathering is set for Saturday, Feb. 14, 2009, at the SDSU Foundation building at the corner of 8th Street and Medary Avenue. The gathering starts at 3:30 p.m. prior to the Jackrabbit women's game at 5:00 p.m. and the Jackrabbit men's game 7:30 p.m. against UMKC. THIS WEEK'S COMPETITION
IPFW Mastodons (8-12, 3-6 Summit, 4-7 Away) ? The Mastodons split a pair of Summit League home games last week, beating Western Illinois 80-71 on Thursday, before falling hard against IUPUI 84-57 on Saturday.
IPFW got a 21-4 run in the second half to send Western Illinois to its fifth straight loss, but could not find an answer to IUPUI on Saturday, as the Jaguars snapped a five-game losing streak.
David Carson leads a pair of Mastodons averaging in double figures with 14.8 points per game. Ben Botts averages 11.2 points per game. Deilvez Yearby averages 8.4 points per game and leads the team with 6.3 rebounds per game.
IPFW shoots .434 from the floor overall and .408 from three-point range in averaging 64.8 points per game, 4.4 less points than its opponents.
The Mastodons also average fewer rebounds, steals and assists than the competition.
The Series vs. IPFW ? The Mastodons lead the all-time series 6-1, including a 100-66 drubbing of the Jacks in the first meeting of the season on Jan. 2.
The Jacks only win in the series came last season in a 73-60 win at Frost Arena on Jan. 4, 2008.
Oakland Golden Grizzlies (13-9, 6-3 Summit, 5-7 Away) ? Oakland cruised to a pair of home league wins last week, beating IUPUI 75-57 on Thursday, followed by an 86-46 win over Western Illinois on Saturday.
Erik Kangas scored a game-high 33 points and Drew Maynard scored 15 points to send IUPUI to its fifth straight loss on Thursday. Kangas scored 27 and got help from Keith Benson with 24 points in sending Western Illinois to its sixth straight loss on Saturday.
Kangas leads OU with an even 19 points per game, Johnathon Jones averages 13.4 point and Benson 12.7 points to go along with his team-high 6.8 rebounds per game.
Oakland shots .457 from the floor and .364 from three-point range in averaging 73.4 points per game, 1.9 more points than its opponents. OU holds the competition to .443 shooting overall, but allows them to shoot .376 from three-point range, 12 points higher than its own total.
Golden Grizzlies opponents come in with 60 more assists, but also come in with more turnovers and fewer blocks and fewer steals.
The Series vs. Oakland ? Oakland leads the all-time series 3-0 after sweeping the season series last year and winning the first meeting of this season 86-81 Rochester, Mich.
All five Jackrabbit starters scored in double figures, led by Garrett Callahan's 24 points, but the SDSU could not get any closer than four points in the second half of this year's first meeting.
