Head coach Jason Liles and the South Dakota State wrestling program announce the signing of five wrestlers who have signed National Letters of Intent, indicating they will compete for the Jackrabbit wrestling team next fall. Four of the incoming freshmen are from Minnesota while one is from California.
The signees include:
Drew Fleming, 125 pounds, Waconia, Minn.
Cody Pack, 133 pounds, Quincy, Calif.
Tony Vaske, 141 pounds, Springfield, Minn.
Andrew Youngblom, 141/149 pounds, Mora, Minn.
Pat Brinkman, Heavyweight, New Ulm, Minn.
Fleming is a two-time Minnesota state champion that boasts a 108-13 overall record. As a junior, Fleming placed first at the state tournament in the 112-pound division with a 40-3 overall record. As a sophomore, he placed first at the state tournament, this time as a 103 pounder, citing a 44-2 overall record. In 2008, he was a USA Wrestling Junior Folkstyle All-American, placing second, and a USA Wrestling Fila Cadet Greco All-American. Fleming also earned All-American status in 2007 in the USA Wrestling Cadet Freestyle event. He is currently ranked by Intermat Magazine as Minnesota's No. 2 overall senior.
"Drew is one the top kids in Minnesota and fills a need in the light weight division," said Liles. "SDSU is a perfect fit for him both academically and athletically."
Pack joins the Jacks family after being ranked No. 2 in the state of California during his sophomore and junior seasons, and has compiled a 128-7 overall record. He is a six-time Greco and Freestyle state champion and has never lost to a California wrestler in those events. On the national level, Pack is a five-time Fargo All-American in Freestyle and Greco while also placing third and fourth in Cadet Greco.
"We are excited to have Cody join the Jackrabbit wrestling family after being recruited by some of the top wrestling programs in the nation," said Liles. "Cody enjoyed SDSU's family atmosphere and bought into the vision of our program."
A true student-athlete, Vaske is a three-time state place winner while also earning Academic All-State and All-American honors in. Vaske has steadily increased his placing at the state tournament, placing fourth at 103 pounds as a freshman with a 33-2 record, placing third at 119 pounds as a sophomore with a 44-1 record and second as a junior at 130 pounds with a 39-3 record. On the national scene, Vaske placed second at the NHSCA Junior Nationals at 130 pounds.
"Tony is the true definition of a student-athlete, we are
excited to have him apart of the Jackrabbit wrestling family," said Liles.
"Tony has a lot of potential and we can see him making an impact on the future
of our program. He has aspirations
of being an All-American and National Champion and we are looking forward to
helping him reach his goals."
Rounding out the new recruits is Youngblom, a two-time fourth-place finisher in the Minnesota state tournament. As a sophomore he place fourth at 130 pounds with a 43-4 overall record and also placed fourth as a junior with a 44-4 record. Youngblom boasts a 159-30 record with 80 pins in his career. He also posted a 4-2 record at the NHSCA Junior Nationals at 135 pounds. Also excelling in the classroom, Youngblom was a two-time All-State selection in 2008 and 2009 while also being named to the Academic All-America team in 2009.
"Andrew is a very gifted athlete and exceptional student," said Liles. "We are excited for him to come to SDSU and focus on wrestling. Andrew will develop quickly and we look forward to him representing our program."
Brinkman is a two-time Minnesota state place winner at 215 pounds. Brinkman earned a runner-up finish at the state tournament after posting a 39-3 record during his junior year. As a sophomore, he posted a 35-5 record while placing fifth. Also as a sophomore, Brinkman placed eighth at the NHSCA Sophomore Nationals as a 215 pounder.
"Pat has excellent potential to be a successful collegiate
heavyweight," said Liles. "His size and wrestling ability should help him make
an immediate impact on our team."
The Jacks travel to the Hoosier Duals this weekend with action slated to begin at 9 a.m.
