South Dakota State and Cal Poly played to 17 ties and exchanged the lead 15 times on Tuesday in Frost Arena, but the Mustangs scored the final eight points to secure its their first road win of the season with a 73-66 win over the Jackrabbits.
The Jacks, who fall to 4-7 with the loss, committed fewer fouls, turned the ball over fewer times than did the Mustangs (3-5), but Cal Poly out rebounded SDSU 41-31, and SDSU head coach Scott Nagy thinks that stat represents the difference between a win and a loss.
"I told the guys that in 15 years, I can probably count on one hand the number of times that we've won a game here when we got out rebounded by 10,"
In addition to the free throw margin, the Jacks shot just 26 percent from the floor in the second half on 7-of-27 shooting, compared to 48 percent by the Mustangs on 11-of-23 shooting. The Jacks kept the game close at the free throw line, but scored just five points from the field over the last 14-plus minutes of the game.
Clint Sargent lead four Jackrabbits in double figures with 16 points, Garrett Callahan added 13, while Tony Fiegen finished with 12. Kai Williams scored 11 points and led the Jacks with eight rebounds.
Lorenzo Keeler led all players with 21 points, Kyle Odister added 17 points, including a 3-pointer with 32 seconds left that broke a 66-all tie. Will Donahue finished with 13 points and added 10 rebounds for the game's only double-double.
The Jackrabbits return to action on Saturday, when they host Central Michigan in Frost Arena at 7 p.m.
