Four straight losses followed South Dakota State's two season-opening wins, forcing the Jackrabbits to hit the road with a 2-4 record this week for their first Summit League weekend of the season.
The Jacks start the week in Indianapolis on Thursday, when they play their first league game of the season at IUPUI. Picked to finish third in The Summit League preseason poll, the Jaguars enter the week with a league-best 5-2 overall record. The Jacks and Jags get things started at 7 p.m. ET.
Following Thursday's game, the Jacks head over to Macomb, Ill., where they take on the Fighting Leathernecks of Western Illinois on Saturday at 7 p.m. One of two teams to not make the league tournament last season, Western came in with the eight spot in the league's preseason poll, which would put them back in the tournament. WIU enters the week with an even 3-3 record on the season.
Denver shot 76 percent from the floor in the second half to secure an 83-80 win over SDSU in the Jackrabbits last game on Nov. 28 in Brookings. Combine that total with its 58 percent effort in the first half, and the Pioneers shot 67 percent for the game.
The Jacks shot 53 percent from the floor in the loss and committed a season-low seven turnovers in the loss, but converted on just 23-of-35 free throw attempts, which opened the door for the Pioneer win.
One of five players to score in double figures in the loss, Garrett Callahan scored 10 points in the game and continues to lead the Jackrabbit offense 12.7 points per game. Clint Sargent averages 11.8 points and leads the team with a 52 percent three-point field goal percentage. Anthony Cordova enters the week averaging 11.5 points and a team-high 6.0 rebounds per game. True freshman Nate Wolters, who scored in double figures in each of the last four games, averages an even 9.0 points per game and leads the Jacks with 18 assists.
