South Dakota State returns to action this weekend against some stiff competition at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic in Las Vegas, Nev., with a 1-3 record in its first four games of the season.
The Jacks opened the 2009 season at the UNI Dome Tournament last weekend with an 8-3 win over North Dakota, but came up short in its next three games of the weekend.
The Jackrabbits pounded out 13 hits and got homeruns from Ashley Durazo and Krystal Higgerson in the win. Pam Nicholson picked up the complete game win in her first collegiate start.
The Jacks led 3-2 after five innings against host Northern Iowa in the second game of the tournament, but the Panthers answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead and eventually the win.
Dayton (Ohio) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back in an 8-0, five-inning defeat of the Jackrabbits on Sunday.
SDSU scored first and held Nebraska scoreless over the first two innings of Sunday's tournament finale, but the Huskers erupted for 11 runs over the final four innings, which included a pair of three-run homeruns from Heidi Foland, to cruise to the 11-2 win.
JACKRABBIT SOFTBALL STADIUM ? Located just north of Coughlin Alumni Stadium, the Jackrabbits played their first game in Jackrabbit Softball Stadium on April 20, 2007, and finished their first season on the new field with a 5-6 record.
An unusually wet spring limited the Jacks to just one doubleheader in 2008, a split with Iowa State on the final day of the season, giving the Jackrabbits a 6-7 all-time record on its relatively new field.
POSTMAS ?STEAL' THE SHOW ? Senior Brooke Postma stole 14 bases in 14 attempts in 2006, followed that up with an SDSU single-season record 27-for-28 effort in 2007 and then stole 17 more bases in 2008 for an SDSU career record of 58. Brooke enters the week with one steal so far this season for a career total of 59
Senior Brittany Postma stole ten bases in 2007, 25 in 2007 and ten more in 2008 for a career total or 45 heading into the 2009 season, good for fifth all-time. Her one steal this season gives her 46 for her career, one shy of tying Ashley Kalina (2002-05) for second all-time and just two short of moving into second all-time with 48.
MARSTON IN CAREER TOP 10s ? Senior pitcher Jenna Marston enters her final year at SDSU ranked in the top-10 in eight different career-pitching categories and on pace to finish first all-time in four of them, including appearances, games started, complete games and innings pitched.
TRANSITION OVER ? The NCAA Division I Management Council Administrative Committee, acting on behalf of the DI Management Council, announced in late June that South Dakota State University met the requirements to become an active member of NCAA Division I, starting at the beginning of the 2008-09 academic year.
Previously a member of Division II, SDSU Successfully completed the five-year process of moving its athletic programs to comply with Division I membership requirements. Those requirements include compliance with Division I rules for the final four years, meeting minimum financial aid and contest scheduling limits, engaging in a rules compliance review and successfully complete the athletics certification process.
SDSU officials submitted an extensive self-study to the NCAA in the spring of 2007 and a peer-review team completed the study during a campus visit in October 2007.
THIS WEEKS OPPONENTS
VIRGINIA NOTES ? The Cavaliers kicked off the season at the Pirate Invitational in Greenville, N.C., with a 3-1 record. Virginia took a pair of games from Middle Tennessee State, 6-3 in the opener and 7-2 in the second meeting, and then split a pair of games with host East Carolina.
The Pirates won the first game 9-1, but the Cavaliers answered with a 12-1 win the the tournament finale.
THE SERIES VS. VIRGINIA ? The Cavaliers defeated the Jackrabbits 5-2 in the first and only meeting between the teams on March 4, 2006, in Marietta, Ga., at the Buzz Classic.
PORTLAND STATE NOTES ? The Vikings opened the season with a 2-2 record at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz., which includes a 10-0 season opening win over McNeese State before dropping its next two games, 8-0 to defending national champion and No. 2 Arizona State and 10-9 to Wichita State. The Vikings closed out the weekend with a 5-4 win over Texas-El Paso.
THE SERIES VS. PORTLAND STATE ? The Vikings lead the all-time series 2-0, with a pair of wins in 2007. PSU scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth to beat the Jacks 1-0 on March 16, in Portland, Ore.
The Jacks and Vikings met again the next day in Corvallis, Ore., where PSU hung on to win 4-3.
SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI NOTES ? The Golden Eagles kicked off their season at home in the Southern Miss Invitational, where they finished with a 2-2 record.
After opening the season with a 5-3 loss to Arkansas on Friday, the Golden Eagles came back to beat the Razorbacks 9-7 on Saturday. They followed that up with an 8-3 loss to Samford on Saturday before closing out the weekend with a 4-3, eight inning win over Central Arkansas.
Southern Miss plays at Mississippi State on Wednesday before leaving for the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic this weekend.
THE SERIES VS. SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI ? First Meeting
LOUISVILLE NOTES ? The Cardinals opened the season last week with a perfect 5-0 start at the Florida International Tournament in Miami, Fla., which includes a season-opening 1-0 win over No. 18 North Carolina.
The Cards followed that up with wins over Florida International (5-1), Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (2-0), Jacksonville 2-0), before wrapping-up the weekend with a 5-3 win over Auburn, who received votes in the pre-season poll.
THE SERIES VS. LOUISVILLE ? First Meeting
UCLA NOTES ? The perennial power Bruins enter the week ranked No. 4 in this weeks USA Today/NFCA poll and fresh off a 3-1 weekend at the season-opening Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament, which they hosted.
Weather cost the Bruins their first two games of the season and they lost their opener 2-1 to Purdue, but UCLA rebounded with three straight wins; 10-2 over Indiana, 6-1 over Cal Poly and 6-2 over No. 25 San Diego State.
