INDIANAPOLIS ? South Dakota State remains winless in Summit League road games extending the streak to 14 over its year and a half in the conference after a 71-63 loss at IUPUI on Thursday in Indianapolis.
The loss drops the Jacks to 10-14 overall, 5-7 in league play and at the same time breaks a fifth place tie with the Jaguars, who improve their Summit League record to an even 6-6, 13-10 overall and avenge an 83-63 loss at Frost Arena in January.
Kai Williams and Anthony Cordova both led the Jackrabbits with 15 points. Williams, who scored all of his points in the second half, also finished the game with a game-high nine rebounds.
IUPUI held the Jacks two leading scorers, Garrett Callahan and Clint Sargent, to a total of 16 points on a combined 5-of-18 shooting (28 percent). Callahan did not score in the second half, as all nine of his points came on three-pointers in the first half.
The Jacks overcame a slow start to shoot 46 percent in the first half on 11-of-24 shooting, but struggled to shoot 36 percent in the second half on 9-fo-25 shooting.
Robert Glenn led three Jaguars in double figures with a game-high 21 points; Jon Avery added 12 and Billy Pettiford ten points off the bench.
The Jaguars shot just 42 percent in the first half on 11-of-26 shooting, but came on strong in the second half to shoot 59 percent on 16-of-27 shooting, which more than made up for their poor three-point shooing.
IUPUI finished the night just 2-of-13 from distance (15 percent), while the SDSU made ten of its 28 tries from beyond the arc (36 percent).
Both teams came out ice cold as the score read 5-5 with more than six minutes off the clock in the first half before the Jags could get something going.
After not scoring a field goal in the first 5 minutes and 15 seconds, IUPUI warmed up and started to build a lead that got to as many as ten points at 25-15 with 5:26 remaining in the first half.
The Jacks answered with a 12-2 to close the half, and the teams went into the lockerroom tied at 27.
SDSU kept it rolling at the start of the second half and reached its largest lead at 44-35 with 13:53 left to play.
IUPUI started chipping away at that lead before eventually taking it over at 52-51 with just under seven minutes on the clock.
The Jaguars would never trail again kept at least a two possession lead for the final four minutes of the contest.
The Jackrabbits now look to break out of their road funk on Saturday, when they travel to Macomb, Ill., to take on Western Illinois in Western Hall at 7 p.m.
The Jacks won the first meeting with the Leathernecks 64-55 on Jan. 8, in Frost Arena.
