BROOKINGS, S.D. ? Brackets and seeding have been announced for the 2009 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. Junior Tyler Sorenson, only the second Jackrabbit to qualify for the national wrestling tournament during the Division I era, drew No. 4 seed Tyrel Todd of Michigan in the first round. The NCAA tournament will be held in St. Louis, Mo., March 19-21, at the Scottrade Center.
Sorenson, a 197-pound wrestler from Garretson, S.D., enters the championships with a 14-2 record on the season and earned a spot at nationals by placing second at the Western Wrestling Conference Championships.
Todd enters Nationals for the fourth consecutive year and earned back-to-back All-American honors after placing fifth in 2007 and third in 2008 at 184 pounds. The senior is 21-1 on the season.
2009 West Regional: At the WWC championships, Sorenson cruised through his first match over No. 3 seed Eric Brennan from Northern Colorado 10-1, sending him to the championship match.
The championship pitted Andrew Anderson of Northern Iowa against Sorenson. Both wrestlers entered the match rated in the latest Intermat/USA Today poll at No. 13 and 14, respectively. Anderson, the only person to defeat Sorenson this season, prevailed in the championship 3-1.
Despite the loss, Sorenson went on to win his true-second place over Alfonso Hernandez of Wyoming, earning him a trip to nationals.
Record vs. tournament participants: Sorenson enters the national tournament with a 1-2 record this season against opponents in the field. Sorenson's biggest win of the season came against Hudson Taylor of Maryland on Jan. 18 when he notched a 13-11 win, propelling him into the national rankings. Taylor is a No. 10 seed in the tournament.
The other opponent is Andrew Anderson of Northern Iowa. Anderson has defeated Sorenson twice this season, winning 6-5 in Brookings on Feb. 21 and in the WWC championship match, 3-1 on March 7. Anderson is a No. 11 seed in the tournament.
