South Dakota State plays its first-ever Summit League games at Jackrabbit Softball Stadium this weekend, when the Jackrabbits host Southern Utah in a three-game weekend series. Weather not only kept the Jacks of their home field last year for every Summit League series, it kept them off for all but one doubleheader on the final day of the season.
Weather could play a role in this weekend's series as well, not wet weather, but rather the cold, which forced the teams to play a single game on Friday at 4 p.m. and a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. instead of two on Friday at 3 p.m. and one on Saturday at noon.
The Jacks open the home schedule with a 6-22 overall record coming off a pair of 8-0 losses at Nebraska on Tuesday, but they also come home with a perfect 3-0 record in The Summit League, after taking all three games from IUPUI last weekend in Indianapolis.
SDSU returns to action, and to the road, next weekend with a three-game series at Centenary. The Jacks took two of a three-game set against the Ladies last season, when the team's met in Omaha, a series moved due to a snow covered field in Brookings.
JACKRABBIT SOFTBALL STADIUM ? Located just north of Coughlin Alumni Stadium, the Jackrabbits played their first game in Jackrabbit Softball Stadium on April 20, 2007, and finished their first season on the new field with a 5-6 record.
An unusually wet spring limited the Jacks to just one doubleheader in 2008, a split with Iowa State on the final day of the season, giving the Jackrabbits a 6-7 all-time record on its relatively new field.
POSTMAS ?STEAL' THE SHOW ? Senior Brooke Postma stole 14 bases in 14 attempts in 2006, followed that up with an SDSU single-season record 27-for-28 effort in 2007 and then stole 17 more bases in 2008 for an SDSU career record of 58. Brooke enters the week with three steals so far this season for a career total of 61.
Senior Brittany Postma stole ten bases in 2007, 25 in 2007 and ten more in 2008 for a career total or 45 heading into the 2009 season, good for fifth all-time. Her five steals this season gives her 48 for her career, good for second all-time, trailing only her twin sister.
EVANS WALKS INTO THE RECORD BOOK ? Senior Stacey Evans drew four walks during the spring break trip and added one more at IUPUI which gives her 57 for her career, good for fifth all-time and two short of fourth place. Stacey Warner holds the SDSU record with 71 free passes from 1995-98.
MARSTON IN CAREER TOP-10s ? Senior pitcher Jenna Marston entered her final year at SDSU ranked in the top-10 in eight different career-pitching categories and on pace to finish first all-time in four of them.
Career complete games became the first record to fall, when she started her 97th career game against Texas Tech on March 12. She broke the complete game record at Nebraska on Tuesday with and needs to appear in two more games to break the SDSU appearances record.
TRANSITION OVER ? The NCAA Division I Management Council Administrative Committee, acting on behalf of the DI Management Council, announced in late June that South Dakota State University met the requirements to become an active member of NCAA Division I, starting at the beginning of the 2008-09 academic year.
Previously a member of Division II, SDSU Successfully completed the five-year process of moving its athletic programs to comply with Division I membership requirements. Those requirements include compliance with Division I rules for the final four years, meeting minimum financial aid and contest scheduling limits, engaging in a rules compliance review and successfully complete the athletics certification process.
SDSU officials submitted an extensive self-study to the NCAA in the spring of 2007 and a peer-review team completed the study during a campus visit in October 2007.
Southern Utah Thunderbirds (11-18, 3-3 Summit, 0-4 Away)
The Thunderbirds come to Brookings for the first time in series history with an 11-18 overall record, an even 3-3 in The Summit League. SUU opened league play at home on March 13 with a pair of losses to the Bison, but rebounded to win the series finale the next day.
The T-Birds then hosted IPFW last week and did things the opposite way of the NDSU series, sweeping the doubleheader on Friday and losing the single game on Saturday.

Southern Utah won the first and third game of the series while the Jacks won the second game.
