South Dakota State heads south this week for eight games scheduled over the Jackrabbits spring break. SDSU opens the week with single games in Tempe, Ariz., against the defending national champion and No. 7 Arizona State Sun Devils on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
The Jacks then head north to San Diego for five games in three days, starting with a doubleheader against Miami (Ohio) on Tuesday, followed by a single game at the other SDSU, San Diego State, on Wednesday, before wrapping up the trip with a doubleheader against Texas Tech on Thursday.
The Jackrabbits escaped the snow falling in Brookings last week, but after the playing their first two of four scheduled games at the Razorback Invitational, the snow found them in Fayettville, Ark, forcing the cancelation of the second day of the tournament.
Following the trip out west, the Jackrabbits open Summit League play on Friday, March 20-21, when they travel to Indianapolis for a three game set at IUPUI.
Shortly after The Summit League opener at IUPUI, the Jacks travel to Lincoln, Neb., for a doubleheader against the Nebraska Cornhuskers on Tuesday, March 24. JACKRABBIT SOFTBALL STADIUM ? Located just north of Coughlin Alumni Stadium, the Jackrabbits played their first game in Jackrabbit Softball Stadium on April 20, 2007, and finished their first season on the new field with a 5-6 record.
An unusually wet spring limited the Jacks to just one doubleheader in 2008, a split with Iowa State on the final day of the season, giving the Jackrabbits a 6-7 all-time record on its relatively new field.
POSTMAS ?STEAL' THE SHOW ? Senior Brooke Postma stole 14 bases in 14 attempts in 2006, followed that up with an SDSU single-season record 27-for-28 effort in 2007 and then stole 17 more bases in 2008 for an SDSU career record of 58. Brooke enters the week with two steals so far this season for a career total of 60.
Senior Brittany Postma stole ten bases in 2007, 25 in 2007 and ten more in 2008 for a career total or 45 heading into the 2009 season, good for fifth all-time. Her three steals this season gives her 48 for her career, good for second all-time, trailing only her twin sister.
MARSTON IN CAREER TOP 10s ? Senior pitcher Jenna Marston entered her final year at SDSU ranked in the top-10 in eight different career-pitching categories and on pace to finish first all-time in four of them. Those categories include appearances, games started, complete games and innings pitched.
TRANSITION OVER ? The NCAA Division I Management Council Administrative Committee, acting on behalf of the DI Management Council, announced in late June that South Dakota State University met the requirements to become an active member of NCAA Division I, starting at the beginning of the 2008-09 academic year.
Previously a member of Division II, SDSU Successfully completed the five-year process of moving its athletic programs to comply with Division I membership requirements. Those requirements include compliance with Division I rules for the final four years, meeting minimum financial aid and contest scheduling limits, engaging in a rules compliance review and successfully complete the athletics certification process.
SDSU officials submitted an extensive self-study to the NCAA in the spring of 2007 and a peer-review team completed the study during a campus visit in October 2007.
SDSU NOTES ? The Jackrabbits enter the week with a 3-12 record after going 1-1 last weekend at the weather-shortened Razorback Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark. SDSU opened the weekend with a 7-3 loss to Wichita State on Friday, but rebounded with a 1-0 win over Bradley.
The wet weather and cold temperatures came in on Saturday and stayed for the duration of the weekend, forcing Arkansas officials to cancel the Jacks games against the host Razorbacks and Ball State.
Brooke Postma led the Jacks at the plate in the two games, going 3-for-5 at the plate, including a double. Greta Stroh went 3-for-6 on the weekend, but Brittany Postma and Dani Broshar batted in the only two runs of the weekend.
Pam Nicholson picked-up the Jacks only win with a complete game shutout against Bradley Nicholson recorded her first career shutout despite giving up nine walks and striking out three. Jenna Marston took the loss against Wichita State, giving up five hits and five runs, three earned, in two innings pitched.
Ashley Durazo leads the Jacks offense with a .409 batting average, with three doubles and with 11 RBI. Brittany Postma ranks second on the team with a .388 batting average after and leads the team with two triples, but has yet to record an RBI.
Nicholson leads the Jackrabbit pitching staff with a 4.79 ERA over 38 innings in eight games. Jenna Marston, who owns the only other SDSU win, enters the week with a 7.92 ERA over 35.1 innings in eight appearances. Marston also leads the team with 26 strikeouts.
