OREM, Utah - Utah Valley University jumped out to a 17-0 lead and cruised to a 38-6 victory in Western Wrestling Conference action Friday night in Orem, Utah, at the Shurian Family Activity Center.
The win improves the Wolverines to 9-3 overall and 3-1 in the conference while the Jacks drop to 1-10-1 and 0-4 in conference matches.
Senior Tyler Sorenson jumped out to an early 4-0 lead on Josh Wood in the first period of the 197-pound bout, scoring a takedown and a two-point nearfall. He would add a reversal in the second period and a takedown in the third and topped it off with a riding-time point to win the match 9-2. Sorenson improves to 24-5 on the season and 10-2 in duals.
Sophomore Dustin Walraven also secured a victory for the Jacks at 141 pounds, outlasting Wyatt Ray in a 3-2 decision. After a scoreless first period, Walraven notched an escape in the second to go up 1-0 heading into the third. The rarely called double caution was whistled in the third and Ray added an escape to knot the score at 2-all, but Walraven held the riding time advantage, winning 3-2. Walraven boosts his record to 19-10 on the year and an even 6-6 in dual action.
The Jacks finish their conference mountain roadtrip at Northern Colorado, with the match scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
