Jacks face Wyoming on Senior Night, Feed the Fans

The South Dakota State wrestiling squad closes out their home schedule, Friday, against the Wyoming Cowboys in a Western Wrestling Conference matchup. The night also marks Feed the Fans Night the final home dual for five Jackrabbit seniors: Dan Bonte, Nick Kulseth, Jeremy Swier, Marc Wermersen, Weston Blasius and Tyler Sorenson.
The Cowboys enter Friday's dual with an 8-3 overall record and a league-best 3-0 mark in conference play. SDSU's record stands at 1-8-1 overall and 0-2 in the WWC.
The Wyoming wrestling team has five wrestlers ranked in the first of three coaches' panel rankings, announced Jan. 21 and three ranked by Intermat wrestling.
Joe LeBlanc, 184 pounds, is tied for the No. 7 ranking in the latest CPR and is ranked No. 9 by InterMat wrestling. 184 pound Shane Onufer was ranked at No. 10 in the CPR and No. 9 by InterMat while Michael Martinez was ranked No. 11 at 125 and is ranked No. 12 by InterMat at 125 pounds.
Other 'Pokes in the CPR are Cory VomBaur at No. 20 at 133 pounds and Chase Smith snuck into the rankings at No. 32 at 141 pounds.
Sophomore Joe LeBlanc leads Wyoming in the wins column with a 28-4 record. Jimmy Bellevill (26-5), Michael Martinez (23-7) and Chase Smith (20-10) have also cracked the 20-win column.
Friday's match features a pair a interesting matchs with senior Tyler Sorenson having the oportunity to avenge a 6-5 loss on December 20, 2009 to L.J. Helbig at 197 pounds. Freshman Aaron Pickrel also have a chance to improve his stock in the tightly contested 125-wightclass in the WWC when he squares off with Michael Martinez.
The Jacks are winless in 10 tries against Wyoming in the all-time series that dates back to the 1953-54 season.

JACKS ON THE MOVE: Freshman Aaron Pickrel at 125 pounds has had quite a season for the Jacks in his freshman campaign. His 20-9 record is good for second on the team in wins behind returning national qualifier Tyler Sorenson at 197 pounds with a 21-5 record. Sophomores Nick Flynn and Dustin Walraven have also cracked the double-digit win column with records of 17-11 and 17-10, respectively.
SDSU TO HOST NCAA WEST REGIONAL: SDSU will host the NCAA West Regional at Frost Arena on Saturday, March 6. Tickets to the day-long event, which serves as the Jackrabbits' qualifying tournament for the NCAA Division I National Wrestling Championships, are $15 for adults and $5 for students are on sale now at the Jackrabbit Ticket office or by calling (866) GO JACKS. Doors will open at 9 a.m. with the event starting at 10 a.m.
SORENSON CRACKS COACHES' PANEL RANKINGS: Senior Tyler Sorenson was named in the first of three Coaches' Panel Rankings at No. 28, as announced by the NCAA. The final rankings will be one of the tools used as part of the selection process to determine the qualifiers for the 2010 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.
