ST. GEORGE, Utah - The South Dakota State softball team won the rubber game against Southern Utah on Saturday in a rain-shortened 8-3 game in St. George, Utah, to take the series 2-1.
The Jackrabbits improve to 7-15 overall with the win, 2-1 in The Summit League, while the Thunderbirds fall to 4-16 overall and 1-2 in league play.
Jackrabbit freshman Krista Honken smacked her first-career homerun in the win, a two-run shot in the second inning that tied the game at 2-2.
SDSU added three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to take a commanding 8-3 lead when the rains came and ended the game after five innings.
Honken finished the game 1-for-3 at the plate, Tina Winter went 1-for-2 with a double, a walk, two RBI and a run scored and Emily Heairet finished the game a perfect 3-for-3 with a double and three RBI in the win.
Kori Seidlitz went the distance for the Jacks, giving up six hits and three runs with three walks and five strikeouts.
SDSU returns to Summit League play next weekend with a three game series in Macomb, Ill, against Western Illinois, the preseason favorite to win the league.
