Hello Jackrabbit Nation!
My name is Ketty Cornemann, former number 22 for the women's basketball team and current number 10 for the Jackrabbit volleyball team. I just might be the oldest recruit in SDSU history, but I felt like a 13 year-old middle schooler when I squeezed into my spandex and hit the court for the first time in four years. I am totally "JACKED" about the opportunity remain a Jackrabbit athlete for another year and compete for another Summit League title.
Since it's early in the summer and we haven't been on too many wild adventures yet, I'm going to recap our spring volleyball season. I joined the volleyball team a week after the Oklahoma Sooners ended my basketball career at the Lloyd Noble Center in Norman, Okla., on March 21, 2010.
The volleyball girls already had a couple weeks of spring training and one weekend tournament under their belts when I jumped aboard ship. I obviously forgot to read the small print before I signed up for the team because if I would have known that we were going practice at 5:30 a.m., I might not have made this commitment! ; ) You should have seen our very pregnant coach, Nana, try to show me how to do multiple defensive moves and footwork. I just said a quick prayer, held my breath and hoped that she didn't fall over.
We competed in two more spring tournaments: our own SDSU tourney and one at Augustana College. From one tournament to the next, I felt that I improved and even our team as a whole made big improvements. We won all of our matches at the Augustana tournament, which was a fun way to wrap up our spring season.
In the weight room, Coach Moe organized an intersquad competition to motivate us and keep things exciting. He split the team into two smaller teams, the YELLOW team and the BLUE team. To give you a better idea of this competition, here are a few examples of different challenges: chin-ups, weight sled races, dodge ball, capture the flag, medicine ball throw races and several other sprint races.
Points were also awarded to your team if one of your teammates received strength and conditioning athlete of the week or athlete of the month honors. Things got pretty heated and it was a tight race until the very end. All the points were calculated and the YELLOW team came out on top! Congrats to Kelli, Shay, Emily, Nicole, Kelsey, Ashley and myself.
I hope you enjoyed the first Jackrabbit Volleyball Blog. Thanks for reading!
GO JACKS!
