South Dakota State's season-long eight game road trip comes to an end this weekend, when the Jackrabbits open Summit League play on at IUPUI on Thursday and at Western Illinois on Saturday. Both games begin at 7 p.m. local time.
SDSU enters league play with a 4-3 overall record, with all four wins coming against fellow mid-major clubs and all three losses on the road against major conference foes Minnesota, Georgia and Nebraska. SDSU opened the season with a home win over Western Michigan, followed road losses at Minnesota and Georgia. The Jackrabbits bounced back with three straight wins in the Macon Subregional of the CBE Classic before falling at Nebraska on Saturday.
Griffan Callahan scored in double figures for a fourth straight game and set career-highs with 25 points and seven three-pointers, but it all came in a losing cause, as SDSU fell to the host Huskers by the score of 76-64 at the Devaney Center in Lincoln, Neb.
The first half saw four ties and four lead changes, with the Jacks leading by as many as three points early in the half, but Nebraska used a pair of 9-2 spurts to take a seven point, 35-28 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Nebraska extended that lead to as many as 12 points in the second half before a Zach Horstman dunk, a Taévaunn Prince put-back and a Callahan three cut the lead to five at 50-45 with 9:35 to play, but Nebraska never let the Jacks get any closer.
Along with his career-high 25 points, Callahan also led the Jacks with seven rebounds. Nate Wolters added 19 points, 13 of which came from the free throw line, as he went 13-for-14 from the charity stripe, missing just his final attempt. He also dished out eight assists. Prince finished with 11 points and grabbed six rebounds in the loss.
Bo Spencer led four Cornhuskers in double figures with 18 points. Brandon Ubel, Toney McCray and Dylan Talley all scored 12 points in the win.

JACKS RECEIVING VOTES MID-MAJOR TOP-25 - South Dakota State received four votes in the most recent collegesinsider.com Mid-Major Top-25 poll released on Nov. 28. The Jackrabbits join three other Summit League teams in the poll, with Oakland ranked No. 21, North Dakota State at No. 24 and Oral Roberts, which received 25 votes.
WOLTERS JOINS THE 1,000-POINT CLUB - Junior Nate Wolters set the sophomore scoring record last season with 604 points. Add that to his 303 points as a freshman, and the standout point guard entered the 2011-12 season needing just 97 points to become the 42nd member of the SDSU 1,000-Point Club, which he accomplished in the Jacks win over Sam Houston State on Nov. 22. Wolters enters the week ranked 33rd all-time at SDSU with 1,050 career points, 17 points shy of passing George Schroeder (1,066 points from 1973-76) for 32nd on the all-time list.
WOLTERS CHASES SCORING RECORD - Nate Wolters scored 303 points as a freshman, and then set the SDSU sophomore scoring record with 604 points. Double his two-year point total of 907 points, and it does not appear that he enters his junior season on pace to break the all-time SDSU scoring record of 1,931 points, but if he can average 512 points per season over his last two years, the record, set by Mark Tetzlaff from 1981-85, would indeed fall.
WOLTERS AND CALLAHAN EARN CBE CLASSIC HONORS - Nate Wolters averaged 19 points per game and dished out 14 assists in leading the Jackrabbits to three wins at the CBE Classic Macon Sub-regional last week, all of which earned him MVP honors at the event. Senior Griffan Callahan averaged 15.7 points and led the Jacks with 6.7 rebounds per game to earn all-tournament team honors.
NAGY NEARS MILESTONE WIN - Already the most prolific coach in SDSU history, Jackrabbit head coach Scott Nagy entered the 2011-12 season with 289 wins, just 11 shy of reaching the 300-win milestone. His four wins this season give him 293 for his career, seven wins shy of the milestone.
THIS WEEK'S OPPONENTS
IUPUI Jaguars (2-5, 0-0 Summit) - IUPUI opened the season with a dominant win over Division III foe Anderson, and then dropped its next four games before getting a win at home against Texas Southern. The Jaguars enter league play fresh off an 81-58 loss at Georgetown on Monday night.
Summit League Preseason Player of the Year Alex Young leads the Jaguars with 17.1 points and with 6.6 rebounds per games. Stephen Thomas leads the team with 29 assists to go along with his 9.2 points per game. Christian Siakam ranks third with 8.4 points per game and second on the team with 5.9 rebounds per game.
The Series vs. IUPUI - The Jaguars lead the all-time series 6-2 after the two teams split the season series in 2010-11, with each team winning on its home floor. IUPUI won 81-76 on Jan. 15, in Indianapolis, while the Jacks won an 81-70 contest on Feb. 10, at Frost Arena.
The Last Meeting: at Frost Arena, Feb. 10, 2011 - On the same night SDSU honored Clint Sargent for breaking its all-time three-point record, the senior showed his appreciation by draining a career-high seven three-pointers in an 81-70 win over IUPUI.
Sargent went 7-of-11 from long range in scoring 23 points to lead the Jackrabbits, who improve to 16-9 overall and 8-6 in The Summit League. Nate Wolters added 21 points and tied a career-high with 11 assists for his third career double-double. Jordan Dykstra scored 13 points off the bench to round out the Jacks double-digit scorers.
Leroy Nobles led five Jaguars in double figures with 19 points. Alex Young scored 14, Stephen Thomas 13, while Sean Esposito and John Ashworth both finished with 10 points. The Jags fell to 15-11 overall and 9-4 in league play with the loss.
Western Illinois Fighting Leathernecks (2-2, 0-0 Summit) - The Fighting Leathernecks, who host undefeated North Dakota State on Thursday, opened the season with losses at Dayton and at Michigan, but bounced back with a home win over Division III Greenville College last week and a 65-62 road win at North Dakota on Saturday.
Four Leathernecks enter league play averaging in double figures, led by Obi Emegano and Terell Parks, who both average and even 13 points per game. Parks also leads the team with 9.8 rebounds per game. Ceola Clark adds an even 12 points per game and a team-high 19 assists, while Tommie Tyler enters with week averaging 10.8 points per game.
The Series vs. Western Illinois - The Jackrabbits lead the all-time series 7-3, with wins in each of the last four games. That streak also includes the Jacks first-ever Summit League road win and the programs 1,300th win, both of which came on Dec. 5, 2009, in Macomb, Ill. The last Leatherneck win in the series came on Feb. 7, 2009, in Macomb by the score of 62-59.
The Last Meeting: at Frost Arena, Feb. 12, 2011 - South Dakota State sent seniors Dale Moss, Clint Sargent and Payton Tivis out in style on Saturday night, and all three contributed to the Jackrabbits 82-61 win over Western Illinois in front of 3,885 fans at Frost Arena.
Despite the Senior Night celebrations, freshman Jordan Dykstra stole the show for the Jacks, who improve to 17-9 overall and 9-6 in The Summit League. Dykstra led all players with 20 points, all in the second half, 10 of which came from the free throw line, where he made all 10 shots and the Jackrabbits as a team went 26-for-27 on the night.
Griffan Callahan added 13 points, Chad White 12, while Sargent and Fiegen both finished with 10 points, as every Jackrabbit logged at least 15 minutes on the floor. Sargent also tied for game-high honors with nine rebounds.
Matt Lander led a quartet of Fighting Leathernecks in double figures with 16 points. Jack Houpt added 15, Kaimarr Price 12 and Jelani Johnson 10 points in the loss.
NEXT UP FOR THE JACKRABBITS - The Jackrabbits return home to Frost Arena for a three game homestand, starting on Tuesday against Southwest Minnesota State at 7 p.m., followed by a game against North Dakota on Saturday Dec, 10, in the back end of the doubleheader at 7:30 p.m. The homestand ends on Monday, Dec. 12, when the Jacks host the Dakota State Trojans at 7 p.m.
