LAWRENCE, Kan. - UMKC handed the South Dakota State softball team its first league loss of the season on Saturday, as the Kangaroos blanked the Jackrabbits 5-0 at a chilly Arrocha Ballpark in Lawrence, Kan., in a game that started at an unseasonably cold 36 degrees.
The loss drops the Jacks to 5-17 overall and 3-1 in The Summit League, while the 'Roos improve to 14-9 overall, 4-3 in league play.
Due to the aforementioned cold temperatures, the teams agreed to move Saturday's second game to Sunday, and play a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
UMKC scored the only runs it would need in the bottom of the first inning, plating two runs on two hits. The Kangaroos added three more in the third on three hits and one SDSU error to get their five runs.
Kangaroo starter Deanna Friese took care of the rest, giving up just one hit and three walks in the complete game win, with nine strikeouts. Friese, who improves to 11-6 with the win, took a no-hit bid into the sixth, before Ashley Durazo broke it up with a leadoff single to centerfield.
Kori Seidlitz started in the circle for the Jacks and took the loss to fall to 2-8 on the season.
