INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The South Dakota State softball team returned to Summit League play on Saturday after four non-conference games during the week, but the return to more familiar opponents yielded similar results, as the Jaguars downed the Jacks 14-6 in the opener and 5-0 in the nightcap.
The sweep drops the Jackrabbits to 8-32 on the season overall and 5-9 in The Summit League. IUPUI improves to 12-15 overall and an even 7-76 in the conference.
The Jacks spotted the Jags a four run lead in Game 1, but halved the lead in the second on Krista Honken's second homerun of the season, a two-run shot over the fence in center field.
IUPUI got an RBI double and a two-run shot of its own to get three more in the bottom of the second to go up 7-2, and then added a single run in the third, two in the fourth and four more in the fifth to secure the five-inning win.
The Jacks did score one on the third on an Ashley Durazo homerun and three in the fourth on an Allison Huffman three-run shot, but the Jackrabbit bats just couldn't keep up with the IUPUI offense.
The Jaguars cracked the scoreboard first in Game 2, plating one run in the second, and then broke the game open with three more in the third to go up 4-0. They went on to add one more in the fourth to secure the 5-0 win.
The Jacks look to avoid the sweep on Sunday in the series finale at 11 a.m.
