Men's
Quarterfinal - #2 South Dakota State vs. #7 IUPUI
March 3, 2012
South Dakota State head coach Scott Nagy
"I told the players after
the game, here over the past two to three weeks, since we've been at home,
defensively I love where we are, and I don't say that very often. Our kids are
really buying into the plan. Tonight we frustrated a very good player [Alex
Young]. The other thing we're doing is we're taking less threes and we're
shooting a better percentage. That happens when you're taking less threes. Our
offense was good because our defense was good. Only thing I don't like is the 12 turnovers. But 56 percent
shooting, 13 of 14 at the line, that's good."
on being a two seed and playing a seven seed, when
a couple years ago SDSU was the seven seed in the tournament
"In conference play, there's just
no fear of anybody. You don't really look at anybody that way. It's a different
kind of pressure (being a two seed), no question about it. But the first game
you always feel a little more pressure and then you can relax."
on the crowd this season
"We've been entertaining
to watch. They've given us a lot of energy. So it's worked both ways. I thought
the guys handled the pressure well, better than me. They're locked in. I think
you saw that tonight. Today was like the longest day in my life. I thought 8:30
would never come. I had to figure out something to do with my nerves. For my players, they're loose. To tell you the truth, I stay away from
them as much as I can, so that it doesn't rub off from me."
on the depth of the bench
"Chad [Whit]) had his knee dinged up a little bit in practice, but he was good
tonight. Taevaunn [Prince], he's just a brute out there. Marcus [Heemstra], he gives our team
energy."
South Dakota State guard Nate Wolters
on his play tonight
"I wanted to come out with energy and give them some spark."
on playing before a record crowd of 6,614
"The crowd was great. It was an
unbelievable atmosphere."
South Dakota State forward Tony Fiegen
on defending Alex Young
"They set a lot of side ball screens. We wanted to make sure we kept him
contained. By halftime he had a couple assists. Coach said that was ok. Let
other people get the points."
on playing IUPUI after just beating them the week
before
"We knew we were going to have to be good defensively. We watched the film of
the game and got ourselves ready. We just wanted to have a good defensive game
again. We just relied on our defense tonight. We preserved again."
IUPUI head coach Todd Howard
"Well we
didn't get much traction coming out of the gates and that's something when
you're on the road you try to avoid. That made it tough. The uphill climb made
it tough. We just didn't close the half well. We had some opportunities that
really I thought could have given us a boost coming out in the second half. You
got to give them [SDSU] credit. They're playing at a high level on all
cylinders and they're fresh. That's really big when they've been at home for
almost a month and to come in and play with this kind of environment, it gives
them a boost. So that uphill climb, we couldn't get traction as hard as we
fought and tried and tried and we just kind of sputtered, but definitely not a
lack of effort. Proud of our guys. Our guys fought from our backs really being
against the wall and not really knowing what was next but I'm very proud,
specifically of the seniors with Alex [Young] and Christian [Siakam] and Steve
[Thomas]. They played at a high level and were phenomenal leaders. This would have been a definite feather
in their cap and I thought we were playing well enough to come in here and do
something. But sometimes it's not your night and you got to give them credit
and we just couldn't get out of that hole."
on whether that was as good as anyone has defended
Alex Young
"Yeah I think
what you're looking becomes a little skewed: it's tough when you're down and
you're trying to force it. It was no fault of his own. He was trying to make
something happen a lot of the time. There are errors of commission and errors
of omission and his were errors of commission. Just trying to make a play as a
senior does in March. That's the great thing about basketball, when you make
shots you can set up your defense. They were able to get hot early so they were
able to load up on him [Young]. Conversely, out of the gates we missed a few
easy looks that were open. If you make those then you're able to set your
defense. That's why the game's good. They're tied together [offense and defense],
you have to do everything. So I think them making shots enabled them to load
up."
on what was the key to shutting down Christian
[Siakam]
"A little bit of everything. Them packing the paint on the drive clogged things
up for him. We wanted a spaced attack where we could look to go to him in a
high-low setting and the angles weren't there. Because they helped from the
corners we were able to get a lot of good looks from the corners and a lot of
production that way but we wanted it to kind of be a little bit of everything.
A little bit of him, a little bit of drive, a little bit of corners but it
starts by them [SDSU] being successful on offense, they're able to get back and
execute better defensively."
IUPUI forward Alex Young
on what SDSU did defensively
"They wouldn't let me come off from my strong hand. Back a week ago at their
place they were really shading me to the right and if I got around the first
guy, you know there's another guy waiting there. They did a good job of outside
defense and really not allowing me to get in my rhythm and making me take tough
shots. If I did hit a shot it was
well deserved so my hat goes off to them and their game plan and their outside
defense."
on going out this way
"It is
disappointing but I'm thankful I've had the chance to play in a championship
and I've won some games in the tournament. Every senior wants to go out on top
so in a sense it's disappointing but I'm proud of my four years at IUPUI and I
definitely look at it as a success. You just gotta roll with the punches and
hope for the best next time."
