DENVER, COLO.- South Dakota State topped Denver, 1-0, in overtime, Sunday afternoon to bring the Jackrabbit women's soccer team's record to 7-4-1 on the season and 2-0 in The Summit League.
Senior defender Delaney Ratcliffe, a native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, scored the winning goal for the Jacks. Ratcliffe scored her first goal of the season four minutes into overtime from 30 yards out after her shot hit the crossbar and bounced in over the goalkeeper's reach.
“We knew Denver would be a much tougher team than their record indicated, and it was a hard-fought game,” head coach Lang Wedemeyer said. “I was proud of the team for finding a way to get a result on the road, but there is much work to be done for the Jacks moving forward.”
The Jackrabbits were outshot by the Pioneers in the game, taking eight shots to Denver's 10. Junior goalkeeper Nicole Inskeep made four total saves and added another shutout to her ledger. Inskeep moved into second place in career shutouts with, tying with Elisa Stamatakis.
The Pioneers' record fell to 0-11-1 for the season and 0-3 in The Summit League. Sunday's contest was a rematch of last year's Summit League championship game, which SDSU won in a shootout.
The Jacks will return to action at Fishback Soccer Park Friday, Oct. 16 at 6 p.m. against South Dakota as a part of the South Dakota Showdown Series.
