Jackrabbit wrestlers win one at Gopher Duals

MINNEAPOLIS – The South Dakota State University wrestling team opened the 2015-16 dual season Saturday by winning one of three at the four-team Gopher Duals hosted by the University of Minnesota.

The Jackrabbits opened the day by falling 23-9 to Virginia, then came back to post a 25-9 victory over Grand Canyon (Ariz.). SDSU closed out the evening session with a 20-13 defeat at the hands of 24^th-ranked Minnesota. The Jackrabbits carried a 13-12 lead into the final two bouts against Minnesota, but the Golden Gophers recorded a pair of major decisions to secure the victory.

SDSU 184-pounder Brady Ayers continued his strong start to the season by winning all three of his matches by decision. The Jackrabbits also were successful in the middle weights as 149-pounder Alex Kocer, 157-pounder Cody Pack and Luke Zilverberg at 165 all won two of their three matches.

The Jackrabbits return to tournament competition next Saturday as they are expected to send wrestlers to the Cyclone Open in Ames, Iowa, and the Bison Open in Fargo, North Dakota. Next dual competition SDSU is Nov. 21, when the Jackrabbits are scheduled to host Virginia Tech.
