SIOUX FALLS – For the third time in four years, South Dakota State advanced the finals of The Summit League Championships, this time with a convincing 78-65 win over rival South Dakota on Monday night at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center.
The win sends the top seeded Jackrabbits to the finals, where they face No. 2 seed North Dakota State in a rematch of the 2013 tournament title tilt at the Sioux Falls Arena, a game the Jackrabbits won 73-67 behind 27 points from tournament MVP and future NBA player Nate Wolters. That 2013 game marks the only meeting between the rival school at The Summit League Championships.
The Jacks and Bison split the regular season series, with each team winning on its home floor. NDSU came out hot and led by as many as 21 points in the game in Fargo, and then held off a late SDSU charge to win 72-69.
In the second meeting, this time at Frost Arena, SDSU led for the majority of the game, but only pulled out the 10-point win with a pair of late free throws in a game that saw just one lead change, but four tie scores.
The defending tournament champion Bison advanced to the tournament title game for the third straight season with a 61-50 win over No. 7 seed Denver in the opener and a 60-56 win over No. 3 seed Oral Roberts on Monday.
THE OPPONENT
NORTH DAKOTA STATE BISON (22-9, 12-4 Summit): Picked to finish fifth in the preseason poll, the defending tournament champion Bison earned the No. 2 seed after sharing the regular season title with the Jackrabbits. NDSU downed No. 7 seed Denver 61-50 in the first round and No. 3 seed Oral Roberts 60-56 in the tournament semifinals on Monday night.
THE SERIES vs. NORTH DAKOTA STATE
The Bison lead the all-time series 112-99 after each team won on its home floor this season. The Jacks won the only meeting in The Summit League Championships on March 12, 2013, when SDSU downed the Bison 73-67 to win in The Summit League title.
