FRESNO, Calif. – Both Elyse Eitel and Lauren Chirnside belted their first home runs of the season, as the South Dakota State softball team closed the Fresno State Classic on Saturday with a 10-3 win over Montana.
The win boosts the Jackrabbits to 5-10 on the season, while the Grizz fall to 4-18.
A senior from San Jose, Calif., Eitel went 3 for 4 at the plate on the day with the two-run home run and a double. She also score two runs.
Down 1-0 in the second, the Jacks took the lead for good on a KayCee Miller 2RBI double, and then added two more on Eitel's bomb in the third to go up 4-1 after three innings.
SDSU added single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, and then put the game away with Chirnside's homer in the sixth, a 3-run shot that put the Jacks up 10-3.
Ashlyn Bender went the distance in the circle, giving up three runs, one earned, on seven hits with seven strikeouts and two walks. She improves to 3-4 with the win.
The Jackrabbits return to action next Saturday, when the open Summit League play at IUPUI. The three game series begins with a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 11 a.m., followed by a single game on Sunday at 10 a.m.
