South Dakota State earned a share of The Summit League regular season title, and opens the 2015 Summit League Championships on Saturday as the No. 1 seed, taking on No. 8 seed Western Illinois at 6 p.m. in the new Denny Sanford Premiere Center in Sioux Falls.
The Jackrabbits enter the tournament with a 21-9 overall record and finished the regular season with 12-4 mark in league play, and share the league title with North Dakota State with the same 12-4 league record. This marks the second regular season crown for the Jacks, who also shared the honor with Western Illinois in 2013.
The Fighting Leathernecks finished ninth in the league standings with an 9-19 overall record and a 3-13 record in league games, but made the eight-team field because Omaha, which finished eighth in the standings, remains ineligible for postseason play.
Both the Jacks and Leathernecks enter the tournament after a loss, as SDSU dropped its final regular season game at South Dakota last Saturday, while Western comes in riding an eight game skid after falling at Fort Wayne in its season finale by the score of 84-64.
THE OPPONENT
WESTERN ILLINOIS FIGHTING LEATHERNECKS (8-19, 3-13 Summit): Picked to finish seventh in the preseason poll, the Leathernecks finished ninth in the league standings, but enter the tournament as the No. 8 seed because Omaha is not eligible for the tournament until next year.
THE SERIES vs. WESTERN ILLINOIS
The Jackrabbits lead the all-time series 17-3, with wins in each of the last 14 meetings, which includes season sweeps in the last six seasons and a pair of wins in The Summit League Championships, including a 71-50 win on March 9, 2014.
