SIOUX FALLS – Top-seeded South Dakota State advanced to The Summit League Championship semifinals on Saturday with a dominant 87-50 quarterfinal win over Western Illinois in front of a tournament record crowd of 9,773 fans at the new Denny Sanford PREMIER Center, a record that may only last two days, as the Jackrabbits face in-state rival South Dakota in the semifinals on Monday at 6 p.m.
The Jacks advanced to the tournament semifinals for the sixth time in seven tries and own a 2-3 record in those games. The No. 5 seed Coyotes, on the other hand, move on to the semis for the first time in three tries after an 82-73 quarterfinal win over No. 4 seed Fort Wayne on Sunday evening.
All 14 Jackrabbits in uniform played at least four minutes and 12 of them scored in the Jackrabbit win over Western Illinois, as SDSU built a 50-21 lead by halftime behind 56 percent shooting and seven 3-pointers. The Jacks continued to build the lead in the second half, which grew to as many as 40 points late.
No. 5 seed South Dakota advanced to the tournament semifinals for the first time in school history with an 82-73 win over No. 4 seed Fort Wayne in the only upset in the opening round of the tournament, although, the No. 5 seed owns a 17-14 advantage over the No. 4 seed in tournament history.
THE OPPONENT
SOUTH DAKOTA COYOTES (17-15, 9-7 Summit): Picked to finish eighth in the preseason poll, the Coyotes earned the No. 5 seed at The Summit League Championships and knocked off No. 4 seed Fort Wayne in the tournament quarterfinals, their first-ever win in the tournament in three tries.
THE SERIES vs. SOUTH DAKOTA
The Jackrabbits lead the all-time series 120-90-1 after the teams split the regular season series. SDSU won the first meeting 71-57 on Jan. 17 at Frost Arena, while the Coyotes won the second meeting 80-64 on Feb. 28 at the DakotaDome. The tie came in a disputed contest on March 12, 1915 in Brookings.
