VERMILLION, S.D. -- South Dakota State women's soccer saw its six-game winning streak come to an end at the hands of rival South Dakota in a 2-1 loss on Friday.
The Jackrabbits (8-5-1, 3-1 Summit League) won the shot battle, 10-8, for the game but saw a USD (3-12-1 (2-3 Summit League) team that was called for 14 fouls, compared to SDSU's four, make the most of its chances to secure the win.
"It was a really tough game for us today," head coach
Lang Wedemeyer said. ""Credit South Dakota for the win, but we didn't come to play."
Nicole Hatcher led the SDSU offense with five shots, putting three on goal while notching the Jacks' lone score.
Lindsee Larson,
Madison Yueill,
Tori Poole and
Darien Poelstra also had shots for the Jackrabbits.
Nicole Inskeep (one save) and
Maggie Smither (two saves) split halves in net once again as both keepers allowed a goal.
SDSU's first shot of the day came off the foot of Hatcher in the 20th minute as the Jackrabbits' points leader fired from the top of the box, only to have USD's Parker Rytz smother the shot for the save. Nine minutes later, Hatcher had another scoring chance, beating a charging keeper to the ball in the left side of the box, but put the one-touch over the cross bar.
After fighting a persistent USD offense for a majority of the first half, the Jackrabbits saw the Coyotes break through with just 1:33 to go in the half. Off a free kick from nearly 50 yards out, USD's Katlin Ptacek took advantage of the elements and put the ball into the net on a bounce.
Out of the break, SDSU threatened early and often and looked poised for an equalizer, but found themselves in a 2-0 hole in the 62nd minute as USD took advantage of SDSU's aggressive style and Taryn LaBree scored on a breakaway.
SDSU struck back just two minutes later, however, to make it a 2-1 game at 63:42. In the box, Hatcher fired a shot that deflected off the cross bar back towards the SDSU midfielder, as she scored her fifth goal of the year on a header.
The Jackrabbit offense pushed hard over the final 26 minutes, but a comeback wasn't in the cards for the Jackrabbits.

South Dakota continues its weekend of road rivalry contests on Sunday at North Dakota State, as the Jackrabbits travel to Fargo, N.D., for a 1 p.m., kickoff.
