OMAHA, Neb. – South Dakota State women's soccer found itself down early and couldn't recover in a Friday night contest at Omaha, falling 1-0 in its road finale.
Â
SDSU (9-5-1, 4-1 Summit League) outshot Omaha (4-9-3, 2-2-1 Summit League), 15-7, on the day and had nine corner kicks but were unable to find the net for just the fourth time this season.
"I thought we played a very good second half but just couldn't find the net after dominating for long stretches," head coach
Lang Wedemeyer said. "But, that is just the cruelty of the game sometimes."
Â
Madison Yueill led the Jacks with five shots on the day, putting two on goal.
Annie Williams had two shots and eight other SDSU players tallied a shot.
Â
Nicole Inskeep and
Maggie Smither split halves in net for the Jackrabbits.
Â
Typically the first-strike team, SDSU found itself in a 1-0 hole in the opening 10 minutes as Omaha's Nyoke Dumba found the net off a corner kick assist from Sophia Roux at 9:12. The Jacks looked for an immediate equalizer with two shots and a corner kick within the next two minutes of game action before the teams settled back into back-and-forth play that sent SDSU to the locker room down one.
Â
Early in the second,
Jennie Scislow's shot at 47:28 looked to be the equalizer SDSU had been chasing before Omaha's Haley Shelton came up with a save to keep the Jacks off the board.
Â
Back-to-back near misses came for SDSU in the 64th and 67th minutes off corner kick opportunities. The first attempt saw
Ashley Adams fire a cross near the far post towards Williams, who got a touch but saw her header pushed to the right of the post. The second was a cross from
Julia Lam into the box and Williams' header narrowly cleared the crossbar.
Â
A finesse shot from the top of the box looked good off the foot of Yeuill at 71:49, only to have it curve to the right of the post once more as SDSU's aggressive play continued to provide scoring opportunities.
Â
Three more SDSU scoring chances came in the 80th and 81st minutes after Omaha penalties were called. A free kick from 25 yards out was saved by Shelton, and the Mavericks' keeper came up with another stop on a Jackrabbit penalty kick attempt soon after before a follow-up one-touch sailed over the cross bar.
