LARAMIE, Wyoming -- Three Jackrabbits scored in double figures but it wasn't as South Dakota State fell, 77-67, at Wyoming on Saturday evening.
SDSU (1-3) shot 35.1 percent from the field and hit 12-of-37 three-pointers on the nation's highest elevated court above sea level (7,220 feet). Wyoming (3-0) hit 24-of-54 field goal attempts (44.4 percent) and had 10 three-pointers.
Mike Daum led all scorers with 24 points, adding eight rebounds to just miss his second consecutive double-double.
Chris Howell and
Reed Tellinghuisen joined him in double figures with 12 and 11, resepectively, as Tellinghuisen added seven rebounds.
Cole Gentry dished out a game-high five assists on the day.
Three Cowboys were in double figures. Justin James scored 18, Jason McManamen added 16 and Alexander Aka Gorski had 15.
The game opened with an onslaught of three-point attempts from each team as 10 of the first 13 field goal attempts were from beyond the arc.
Tevin King hit a three-pointer at 15:49 to give SDSU its first lead of the night, 8-6, as a media timeout was taken after a technical foul on the Jacks. The Cowboys responded with 10 unaswered out of the pause to go up 16-8 just past the 14-minute mark, but the Jacks chipped away at the deficit and eventually took a 23-21 lead inside 10 minutes to play, outscoring Wyoming 15-5 in that stretch.
The Jacks continued to push and led, 27-23, just prior to the under eight media timeout after shooting 52.4 percent from the field in opening 13 minutes of play.Â
SDSU pushed its lead to 32-26 at 4:41 off of Daum's third three-pointer of the night, but couldn't shake a pesky Wyoming attack as the Cowboys regained a 33-32 lead with 1:33 on the clock. The teams traded three-pointers over the next 30 seconds of play, and though SDSU had a chance for a lead as the clock counted down, the deficit stayed at one, 36-35, at the half.
Daum led all scorers with 16 points in the half, hitting 4-of-5 three-pointers. Howell added eight for the Jacks while
Cole Gentry dished out three assists in the opening 20 minutes.
Wyoming opened the second half with six unanswered, holding the Jacks scoreless in the period until 14:42, when Tellinghuisen made it 42-38 with a three-pointer from the corner.
Down 49-42 at 12:25, that score held until 9:46 with
A.J. Hess hit a three-pointer in transition to make it a four-point game, ending a scoreless stretch of nearly three minutes for the Jacks, and on the other end Wyoming ended a scoreless streak of nearly the same length for the home team.
Free throws kept things within striking distance for the Jacks as SDSU hit only one field goal between 13:01 and 5:37, when Howell hit a runner in the lane to move SDSU back within single digits, down 63-54.
Down 10 with five minutes to play,
Ian Theisen hit a much-needed three-pointer for the Jacks at 3:50 to make it 65-58, and though SDSU did not allow a field goal from Wyoming for over three minutes late in the game, a Jackrabbit comeback fell short, though it did not lack drama inside the final minute.
Tellinghuisen was fouled on a three-point attempt and hit all three from the charity stripe with 57 seconds left, and
Mike Daum had a four-point play with a contested three-pointer and free throw with 34 seconds on the clock to draw SDSU within six, but Wyoming matched the Jacks on the other end to hang on for the win.
