South Dakota State shook off a hard-charging Murray State squad to claim an 88-84 overtime victory at home Saturday afternoon in the final non-conference home game of 2016.
SDSU (6-7) extended its home winning streak to 34 games and continues to sit second nationally in that category. Murray State (5-7) used a 43-point second half to force overtime and hit 17 3-pointers on the day, but the Jackrabbits shot 49.1 percent from the field, 8 of 20 from 3-point range and 28 of 31 from the charity stripe to pull out the win.
Mike Daum led the program with a 39-point, 11-rebound double-double as the Jackrabbit big man went 16 of 16 at the charity stripe for his sixth career double-double.
Reed Tellinghuisen added 13 points with six assists and seven rebounds while
A.J. Hess dropped 11 points on the day with four rebounds.
Andre Wallace finished with eight points with a pair of 3-pointers on the day and
Michael Orris had seven, thanks in part to going 5 of 6 on free throws.
After spotting opponents first half leads of eight or more in the past three games, it was SDSU's turn to lead big early with a 16-5 advantage seven and a half minutes into the game, thanks to a 10-0 run.
Murray State responded with 10 unanswered of its own to cut the gap to one (18-17) inside 10 minutes to go in the half. A stretch of nearly four scoreless minutes for SDSU ended with a Daum tip-in an offensive board at 8:35.
The game of runs continued as SDSU stretched its lead back to seven (24-17), only to have the Racers close it to three (26-23) with a 6-2 burst of their own. Another six straight for SDSU moved it back to nine (32-23) inside the final media timeout of the half, but once again Murray State matched the Jackrabbit effort and trailed 32-29, with 1:38 to go in the half.
Over the final 90 seconds before the break, Orris hit a pair of free throws, but that was it for scoring as SDSU carried a 34-29 lead into the locker room.
South Dakota State shot just under 50 percent (13 of 27) from the field in the opening frame and was perfect (5 of 5) from the charity stripe, continuing its hot shooting of late.Â
Murray State opened the second half on a 7-2 run to tie things, 36-all, in the opening three minutes before Daum scored six straight for SDSU to open up a 42-36 lead as Murray State went over four minutes without a point.
Though the Racers stopped the run, Daum, Tellinghuisen and Wallace fired off 3-pointers in three straight SDSU possessions and the Jacks' lead reached double figures (51-41) at 12:00 for the first time since 12:16 of the first half.
On the verge of putting things away, South Dakota State couldn't shake a pesky Murray State squad that climbed back within one, 57-56, before
A.J. Hess came through with a much-needed 3-pointer to put the Jacks back in a two-possession lead with seven minutes to play.
Inside five minutes to play, Daum's set of free throws moved SDSU back ahead three, and after a steal on the defensive end Orris drove past the Racer defense for a layup to give SDSU a 66-61 lead at 4:05. Murray State, however, wouldn't wilt and a deep 3-pointer from Stark tied it at 72 inside the final minute.
Neither team found a potential game-winner in the final minute and the Jacks found themselves in their second overtime game of the season.
SDSU opened the extra period with a pair of free throws but saw Murray State take their first lead of the game moments later, eventually going ahead 79-76 with 3:10 to play. Â It was SDSU's turn to try and find the answer and came up with a 9-0 run (including seven free throws) to bring overtime inside the final minute.Â
Leading 85-79 at that point, SDSU saw the Racers score five points in just three seconds to cut the lead to one with 26 seconds to play. On the other end, SDSU converted just 1 of 2 free throws with 19 seconds on the clock, but an offensive board and heady play from Daum to wait and draw a foul helped the Jacks seal the win.
T.J. Otzelberger
On facing Murray State and finding a way to win in overtime:
"They're a really good program. I have a lot of respect for not only what they have accomplished in the past, but they have had a really challenging schedule on the road so far this year. They've played some good teams, and they've played everybody close. Obviously, their point guard Jonathan Stark is phenomenal. He was exceptional tonight, but I felt like that was a quality win for us. It was a gut check for our team, and I am really happy with their effort."
Â
On leading the majority of the game and falling behind in overtime ...Â
"The way we started overtime, I think they scored seven right away. Our guys show composure and resolve down the stretch, and that's something where we haven't had a ton of close games and we haven't shown it at times down the stretch. To be down in overtime, and keep it together, to get great shots, I'm just really happy with our guys effort's and the way that we played for each other and we stuck together."
Â
On shot selection and not settling for bad shots ...
"I feel that we really imposed our will on the game with the shots that we wanted to get. I was really happy with that. That was our central message all week in practice was that, for us, every shot needs to be the best shot that we can get on every possession. Just play that one possession and get the best shot that we can. Our guys had a great commitment to that. I thought we really did a great job of getting Mike established, and he did a great job of making plays out of it. I think our guys played with a great sense of purpose and I'm really proud of them."
  Â
On Daum's play ... Â
"Mike is sensational. I felt like this game was a little more physical than some that we've had and he really had to work as crazy as that sounds. He was efficient as always, he did it on 22 shots. But I'll tell you what, with all the great plays, I'll tell you what I'm most proud of from the game tonight is that free-throw rebound late in overtime to secure the game. That was a big-time play by a big-time player when we needed one. As great as all the plays were, that was phenomenal. It was a tremendous effort by Mike."
Â
On Orris' play ...Â
"I liked his energy when he came out. He's a veteran guard and we know that he has that capability. I like how he quarterback's the bunch, and that's why we kept going back to him. The team threatened us a little bit more and we thought that we needed more of a ball-handling presence, and Mike did a great job. He was put in some tough spots. He hit some big free throws. I am really excited for the effort that he brought today in helping us win."
