South Dakota State University head football coach John Stiegelmeier announced Tuesday the hiring of Jake Dickert as assistant coach in charge of the team's safeties.
"We are excited to add Jake Dickert to our staff," Stiegelmeier said. "He brings a championship mentality with him, having been a big part of two great seasons at Minnesota State, Mankato."
Dickert spent the past two seasons as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Minnesota State, Mankato, where he helped lead the Mavericks to a 24-3 overall record and back-to-back Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference titles. The Mavericks ranked in the top five among NCAA Division II programs for both scoring defense and third-down defense in both 2014 and 2015 en route to a pair of playoff berths. The 2014 squad advanced all the way to the national title game.
In his two seasons at MSU, Dickert coached 16 all-conference performers, three first-team All-Americans and two NSIC Defensive Player of the Year honorees.
Coaching at SDSU will mark a return to the state of South Dakota for Dickert, who previously served two different coaching stints in the Rushmore State. He spent the 2011 season as defensive backs coach and special teams coordinator at the University of South Dakota, where he coached three all-Great West Football Conference performers. In 2013, he was the defensive coordinator at Augustana, guiding the Sioux Falls-based program to top-three rankings in the NSIC for passing defense, rushing defense and total defense.
A 2007 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, Dickert began his collegiate coaching career as a graduate assistant at his alma mater before moving on to North Dakota State for three seasons (2008-10). He also coached one other season in the Football Championship Subdivision ranks at Southeast Missouri State (2012).
Dickert will join a Jackrabbit program that has reached the FCS playoffs each of the past four seasons. The 2015 squad posted an 8-4 overall record that included a 5-3 mark in the Missouri Valley Football Conference. SDSU ended the season with rankings of 15th in the STATS media poll and 16th in the FCS coaches' poll.
The Jackrabbits are scheduled to open the 2016 season Sept. 3 at Texas Christian. SDSU will kick off the home season Sept. 10, opening the new Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium with a game against Drake.
